I agree with the OP. Jump like FFXIII where it's action oriented in certain spots to give us that super hero-esq feel. It's a game, we don't want it to be overly realistic after all...if you do want a super realistic game, there's always real life. :-P

So I agree there's no point in people spamming jump. Especially with so much being server side, it's just gonna crash people having all that extra data just to see 100 people jumping around in town like idiots who have no idea how the S&R packets are working. Having it as a controlled action would be nice though.

If they really wanted to make a tactical use for it in battle, you could always have the ability to jump on huge mobs and attack the back of the neck/head, like on the great buff and stuff. Of course if they did do that I'd like to see it be class specific to LNC or MRD or something.

The best thing of contextual jumping is that they can create dedicated, context-sensitive animations for it, instead of the random, generic jumping animation that you see in other MMORPGs, that looks horrible.
I would like both, like in Call of Duty or Tomb Raider. You can jump freely and also interact with objects of certain heights in a predetermined way.

The reason I dislike contextual jumping purely on its own is because I imagine its implementation in exploration to defeat the purpose of exploration. Earlier in this thread, somebody mentioned Final Fantasy X-2 as an exemplar of how contextual jumping should be implemented. In FFX-2 you could only jump in specific places which the game decided for you.

This is the crux of the matter, I don't want the game to decide for me. I want to decide.

you guys consider that if they add an auto jump ppl will go to the auto jump places and just run around those areas all day? so they would be spamming auto jump......

    ppl like spamming things.

I can say dance emotes in ffxi bothered me cuz ppl spam them , use the "it looks silly, breaks immersion, is unrealistic" so let remove all dance emotes from both ffxi and ffxiv as ppl spamming dance emotes bothers me.

sorry doubled standered sucks goes for both the jp crowd and english crowd.

you fear jump will be spammed yet it is ok for emote spam.

its the same thing guys get over your pethetic troubles over hating WoW which is what this is really about. Stop thinking about the no need for jump because of how the game is now. Think of what can be added because of jump and swimming. Alot of cool things that will get ppl to play. Alot of dynamic content that will be engaging.

if your against the addition of possible content then stop screaming for a lack of it. Since there will always be a lack of content

I am not concerned about jump being added....

But If jump is added, please make sure we have a way to reset our location if we get stuck in the environment or fall through the map. I can see adding jumping leading to problems if it is not tested throughly. Getting stuck becomes a very real possibility also players might be able to find exploits and glitches if they can jump.

I do feel though that the amount of time and effort needed to add jumping to the game would be better spent on other more important, more urgent things.

A lot of players cite jumping as taking away from the atmosphere of the game, but Archers and Pugilists already do it.

Our characters have legs, they can jump.

I agree with the OP but the problem will still remain that there may be places that the development team didn't think about when incorporating a jumping node ala XIII.

I feel a hybrid of the two concepts would best help the player base. Having an available button to use only during special context sensitive scenarios in which it would be necessary is the ideal implementation for a jump feature.

The Assassin's Creed series tends to implement every action in this type of manner. All the Square-Enix team has to worry about is one.

This way development time isn't eaten up, we get the use of the feature, the gameplay and exploration isn't fundamentally changed and we don't get people jumping around like clowns at the Aetheryte camps.

We already have people that run in circles.

    Everyone wins. Except for clowns.

I actually like the implementation of swimming.

I always thought it was cheesy that Tommy Vercetti could ride a motorcycle at 80 mph head on into a truck, be shot multiple times by cops, and ruthlessly stabbed by rival thugs but if he accidentally trips into some head deep water he's as good as dead.

    Same applies for all games.

    Exclamation From Director/Producer Yoshida!

Greetings everyone! FFXIV Producer/Director Yoshida has made some comments about "jumping" that we wanted to make sure you saw!

Hi everyone, this is Producer/Director Yoshida!

Thanks so much for the lively discussion in regards to jumping.
Since the points that we are currently reviewing in regards to jumping have caused a lot of confusion for the community, I’ll go ahead organize them there.

    Jump review:
    • One form of emotional expression
    • Additional action-related expression during movement
    • Able to get over small fences (This is not the main idea)
I believe that jumping as a form of expression, which allows the player to indicate the location of NPCs and also to inform others of meeting locations, will be able to be used in many subtle ways.
However comments such as "Aesthetically, the game will be ruined by everyone jumping around," and "It’s not FINAL FANTASY," and other comments were a bit unexpected, so I decided to add these types of comments into our discussion as well.

Though the idea of jumping was based on wanting to reduce the feeling of being tied to the ground, I will continue to evaluate whether or not this should be implemented by following along with your discussions and comments!

    Map Collision Detection Adjustments:
    • Being unable to descend ledges where it seems you can easily fall off
    • Feeling of strangeness when you can't climb up a hill that looks to be easily climbable
We have received a lot of feedback pointing these things out from numerous players, but the task of relieving stress during character movement is currently being tested by development in the form of map collision detection adjustments.
If you can think about this separately from the jump implementation discussion it would really help a lot.
