Are you kidding me? Like aggro indicators, guildleve holograms, quest markers (!), comical spell effects (spell defects more like), and a whole host of other features don't already degrade the atmosphere for you.

At least jumping is natural. People can say jumping is obnoxious all they like, but could they please care to explain how it actually IS obnoxious? Do you forsee people jumping all over your screen or something? Are you scared of plummeting to your death? Do you think MMORPGs and platform games are mutually exclusive for irrational reasons?

Because if you think any of those things, there is either an obvious compromise/fix or else you're just flat out wrong.

For example, if people jumping around ruins your immersion, then how about the idea that any jumping SE decides to add comes with a cool down? In real life, most people can't go jumping around without seriously becoming fatigued, so a cool-down timer reflects reality a little more closely.

How about the jump animations resemble very closely those in real life, such that it isn't obnoxious or distracting?

It's pretty short sighted to just dismiss free-jumping altogether without first weighing the pros and cons and considering a good compromise.

There are many pros for free jumping. For istance, it adds an entirely new dimension to exploration. Most people cite exploration in FFXIV as being unexciting, so a jump feature could add new heights to this aspect of the game, literally even.

I mean, can you please, for once in your life, remove yourself from the game worlds you know and envision something better?

I think there should be both climbing, clambering, and jumping. Climbing to get up onto cliffs heigher than one's own height, clambering to get over short ledges/obstacles, and jumping to get over small gaps.
