I think that jumping can open up a lot of interesting gameplay features in PvE. However, I don't think jumping is really necessary in the game currently. Unless they plan on using jump as a mechanic in bosses/PvE, then I don't see it being that necessary. The auto jump for terrain would be nice, though

There's no point to having a jump feature. It gets us nowhere. The game design will be altered from very early on if there should be jumping involved, just adding it after the fact serves us no purpose.
Setting up an algorithm that checks for small ledges that can be jumped up? Different story, but that should be done automatically and without pressing a button, just running at a stopping point in the surface closely connected to another walkable surface.
No offense, but the game feels old fashioned (in a bad way) without a jump feature of sorts, I really hate having to run a mile around a cliff that has a foot drop off, it is simply retarded. Also in no way will it degrade character and atmosphere that is the most idiotic thing I have ever heard. I am sure they would implement the "Jump Feature" ( not jump button) in a pleasant way and differently than other games use it. Similar to Zelda or FFXIII.
Even if they did just make it a normal jump button and you could stand around jumping it wouldn't bother me one bit, whether you leave you character afk selling stuff on a bazaar even though you have 2 retainers for that, or you just running circles around Ul'dah because of the lack of content or whatever else people do. In no way is someone doing what they want to do any more annoying than the things I just mentioned.
Why does it bother people so much anyways? What someone does with their time shouldn't bother you, for it doesn't involve you. By adding jump into the game they add more ways to make NM encounters unique or other boss battles or quests or leves or whatever else and it enhances the ability to travel quickly.
No thank you on the jump function. Stick with the old fashion FF style.

If you add jump, it just means everyone in Ul'dah will be jumping 24/7 and many players will feel disgusted and want to avoid the city > other players > the game. It's not a good idea.

I think there are about 100 other things i would like to see before i see jump
You are entitled to you opinion and mine is I honestly think the people who do not want a jump feature of sorts are the same people who have only playing FFXI or games that its normal to be rooted to the ground for no good reason. Or the people who are anti-WoW who think adding a jump button will make it like WoW. WRONG WRONG WRONG WRONG WRONG. There are several other MMOs that have a jump button that you don't see people standing around town all day jumping, the reason people do it on WoW is because of the fluidity of it and out of sheer boredom of nothing to do while in town.
SquareEnix I know you are working on the "Jump Feature" so please just stick with it and add in it a different way whether people say they don't like it now, if it becomes a problem after implementation you can always remove it.

I definitely think a context-sensitive jump is the best approach for FFXIV. Similar to FFXIII, if you approach a ledge or a small gap, there will be a marker near it that means if you touch it, your character jumps. It's also pretty much how Zelda handles jumps, you can't jump whenever you want, only up/down ledges.
