I wish there was a like button in these forumsThis should end the topic. Why would you turn down a feature? Do you want the stretch emote removed too as it is spammed pretty heavily.
One last point, it's much harder to implement the FFXIII step up feature than just open world jump. Think of just how many scripts would have to be added to the game in La Noscea alone.
Give us jump, but you can hold off on giving it to us until you fire up some more content and fix the battle system.![]()

Folks, why all the jump hate? Do you all hate Mario or something?
Oh look, now you've made Mario mad.![]()

Honestly, the game should just have jump to prevent any little annoyances. We live in 2011 now, FF14 should get with the program.
However, it shouldn't be mindless retarded looking animations. They should even consider strategic use like in Dungeons & Dragons Online.
It would just be awesome to see a lancer stab his polearm into the ground and thrust upwards over something (VERY Final Fantasy-esque).

I agree, class specific animations to scale obstacles would be nice.Honestly, the game should just have jump to prevent any little annoyances. We live in 2011 now, FF14 should get with the program.

Including jump wouldn't necessarily fix "annoyances" people have regarding terrain navigation. Surely it would just be easier to implement an ability to walk off cliff edges (as long as you are not too high - else you could take damage or die), climb up ledges/walls, or automatically jump a gap? If it's done correctly, that would surely fix issues of navigation.
Someone asked why some emotes were included and jump wasn't.....I find people bouncing around everywhere like Gummi Bears a little more distracting/annoying than someone continually stretching or doing another emote.
If you were looking to implement jump "fairly", all races would have to be able to jump the same obstacles. That would mean either Lalafell being able to jump like 10 foot vertically to match Roegadyn, or Roegadyn can only jump a foot off the ground. Either way, it would look silly. Just putting it in as an animation for the sake of it seems pointless to me. There's plenty of other things SE have to get on with without overburdening them with (currently) unnecessary things.

After reading through almost all of the posts so far (skipped the last few pages), I just want to ask this to the people that want free-jumping and to the people that want situation specific-jumping/climbing, etc.: Considering development is geared towards convenience/enjoyment right now, what kind of jumping should really be focused on? Which is closer to a necessity?
*Personally* the only major terrain-related issue has been small ledges (and jumping is terrain-related). Falling off of them is not only obnoxious, but it also doesn't make much sense that you can't climb back up them. As for it being more difficult to implement than free jumping, I don't think that's true...having some jump/climb-specific points (button commanded or automatic) would probably be easier than having to check everywhere to make sure that jumping doesn't bug/glitch in some way. Also, if free-jumping were implemented, people may start wanting it to be relevant...because at this point, it sort of isn't; that alone could lead to its own slippery slope.
What I'm really trying to say here is the focus should be on trying to deal with jumping in a way that is as useful as it needs to be, so attention can be invested in stuff that can be enjoyed without the consideration of jumping entirely.
On a side note: I also sort of agree with the person/people that said that going AROUND an obstacle isn't such a huge thing either. I've fallen off the same cliffy-ledge during the same leve about 2-3 times, but I've learned to not fall off of it or to learn not to fall off of it.

I think fixing terrain would be a better idea.
I would like to jump but without front/backflips. If you fall from a great height you should die.

FFXIII jump system or non at all
Being able to get over small ridges in certain outdoor areas is really the only major annoyance I'm aware of. It doesn't even have to be "jumping" so much as the character pulling themselves over the ridge, or something like that. However, given the height differences between races and the likelihood that these ridges were never designed to be "traversed" it could be difficult to come up with a consistently believable animation for all occasions.
For that reason, player-initiated jumping would probably work better than context-based.
