One of the best pro arguments so far.I would like jumping. Jumping allows you to develop future quests and dungeons with unique action-oriented mechanisms in mind.
3-dimensionality really expands what you can add to the game.
I also chuckle whenever I see some stupid WoW Goblin hop around
a pole for half an hour, but who says this would be possible in FFXIV?
Just make "Jump" another stamina-dependent move, et voila: problem
solved. And while you are at it, also add "sprint" as a stamina dependent
move.
Just imagine how this would expand the demands on player skill: Jump to
evade Vrtras tail sweep, and sprint to escape those 1000 needles. Stupid
bot forgot to jump? Well, sorry Mr. Gilseller...

Well, I'm kind of on the fence. I barely played the past two months and have recently come back to check out the progress so far...
Jumping is so not going to make a difference for me.
Jumping would be a minor convenience for the people who have never left. If they haven't left or cut way back by now...they are probably in it for the long haul anyway.
I just don't see how you could add jumping and have it be anything more than a lot of work for something that's not a big deal at all. Or have it be an impossible amount of work to the point of basically re-doing the game.
I've thought, maybe it would be kind of awesome if there was more of an action, almost platformer type enviornment...more swimming and climbing...tomb raider like levels/areas/tombs??
Or...more of a Morrowind type set up would be neat, with a first person option, high jumping for those with a high acrobatic skill, and huge falls and swimming and swimming underwater and such...featherfall potions, levitate spells, boots that let you walk across the air for a half minute or two...
edit: yeah and combat stuff like the guy above just mentioned
But come on, are they really going to __completely__ re-do the game engine at this point? I mean, I know they are working on doing some kind of a big significant change but...really, could they do THAT much?

What makes you think they would have to redo the entire game engine? All jumping would entail is making the character move up along the Y axis whenever the player pressed a button. That's not hard to program.

I think they should add a jump function similar to ff xiii. If they did that they could make the environment more exciting in design, and also make the character seem less like a stiffy.

i agree with the dev on one condition. i get an acrobatic rank that lets me make some jumps and not others and i can work out to increase my acrobatics.

I don't know whats more amusing, the stereotype hatred towards jumping like everyone in the game is going to do nothing but jump if its implemented or the suggestion of making it contextual that actually does break emersion on top of costing more to do.
There is no real reason not to have it, it's only going to be costly if you keep demanding it be done with heavy restrictions.

Yes plz to contextual jumping a la FFXIII.
Though obviously Roegadyn are going to be able to get up bigger cliffs than Lalafell.
Therefore I propose small holes that only us Lalas can get through!
Whoa imagine that, you could use the physical elements of the different races to encourage (enforce) teamwork in dungeons...

My only concern with contextual jumping like FFXIII is that it would take a lot longer to implement, since SE would have to go through the entire game world and add "jump points" where ever they were needed, which would take a lot of development time and money away from other things.
A simple jump button, on the other hand could be programmed in a matter of minutes, with the actual character animations (including motion capture and cleanup) taking maybe a week or so.
Contextual jumping would take a lot longer to implement, cost more money, and in the end would be less effective since we would have to rely on pre-designated jump-points to get over any obstacles we'd encounter in the terrain. And if SE forgot to put a jump-point at a particular location where it was needed.... well, that would cause quite a lot of complaints I think.
Here's an idea: Lalafells do a flip in the air whenever they jump, thus allowing them to jump just as high as the other races, despite being significantly shorter!![]()

i would support jumping only to get up ledges you would otherwise have to walk around to get up sort of like an action and only in certain places
