Exactly, this is scaring me so much. The fanatic anti-jumping, flat-out no response. I thought perhaps the official forums would be a place for discussion but obviously not. Every suggestion that isn't immediately related to FFXI is just declined.

because jumping IS pointless, there is nothing to discuss about it.
Well it could drive a lot of interesting content (jumping) and heighten exploration, so it isn't pointless.
I don't just think it is pointless, I know it is, I mean, there is plenty of people here who agree.
Jumping would be a good thing for this game, sure. So would loads of end-game content, or additional classes, or chocobos and airships or companies or... well lots of stuff.
To me, jumping is one of those low-priority ideas. It'd be nice, sure, but the time spent on it could be better spent elsewhere.
If someone wins an argument, they have learned nothing.
FOR DOCKHAND!
No jumping. This isn't World of Warcraft.
Various players have mentioned they believe that jumping should be this extensive grandiose Super Mario Bros feature. The main issue with jumping being that this "mini-game" or complex tie-in to the world would require a overhaul of the games physics engine, which equals a lot more lag and lag balancing. This isn't a platformer. IF ANY jumping is included it should be minimal instances such as jumping over small obstacles.
I enjoyed reading some of your replies to this post, and hadn't intended to post myself, but this is too much to pass up.
Personally, I think the game needs a jump. It seems most people don't want it, and one person mentioned about having to change the world physics in order to impliment it. And that is exactly why I think the game needs it.
You're out and about, doing a leve perhaps. You see the mobs you're after on your map. You head in that direction, but this tiny cliff, either up or down, is in your way. That makes the game too linear, and is in my *opinion* a very horrible design.
Also, adding a ff13 type jump I also think (my opinion again) would be a bad idea, as it only promotes even further linear type movement. I could be wrong here, and correct me if I am, but part of what draws people towards mmos is how open ended the game style is. Look at the areas surrounding gridania for example. There has been a lot of criticism on just how linear those areas are, and if you're still playing the game (like I hope most posting here are), you know that those zones are all but completely empty.
One of the things that I always appreciated in FFXI was--and I know I'm being somewhat of a contrarian here--the feeling that the world was, in a way, a complex obstacle course. It could sometimes work against you but, on the other hand, it made you become extremely aware of your environment and, because of this, increased the general sense of immersion.
Yes, this kind of jumping I welcome. It was fun to just look around for new places, and jumping was a fun way of getting to new places there. But how do you do this with larger groups?
