If it was designed so that when you jump, your speed decreases a bit from whatever the full-tilt speed is, it might deter some from mindlessly spam-jumping while traveling from point A to point B for the sake of boredom. Would it stop that entirely? No, but you'd just be left with the people who have that kind of time to waste and aren't in parties where they'd have other people waiting on their stupid jumping butts to catch up. If your bored jumping habits meant party members had to wait on you to take twice as long to get somewhere, you might find yourself kicked out of parties more often. X)

I don't agree that there should be cooldowns on movement outside of battle or outside of active mode. People spam things (like Goobbue calling or Moogle-weapon squeaking) frankly, I think jump-spam is the least annoying.

Like I said in another thread: You'd have to be a fool to think they won't incorporate jump into some puzzle/boss/dungeon in the future. Doesn't have to be at release. They'll have you use it for something.
Complaining about people spamming jump? Who cares? I never notice anyone doing that in other MMOs. I see them, but I don't CARE enough to really hate on someone for doing it. Just like I don't hate on someone spamming /laugh motion or /huh motion in crowds.
    I spam /happy motion.

No. I would rather them spend development time on actual content.

Herp derp, pretty sure they spent very very little time developing a jump feature. It's not like it's some cutting edge mechanic that's brand new and took a large team of rocket scientists.

I was talking about implementing code to limit jumping would take unnecessary time, which I disagree with. Regardless of the amount of time it takes, it's still pointless man hours to put in an equally pointless "limit how much people can jump" mechanic.

You'd be surprised how costly animation can be.

They need to capture the motion for each race.. Probably taking multiple tries.. then calibrate and tweak the animation with tools/software to it flows naturally from jumping, to landing, to running.. repeat this process for each race and gender in the game.. and they also have the chocobos that can jump, which probably also took a long time to get it right.

And then they probably have to make sure that jumping works and is functional in-game; gods forbid that jumping causes the game to crash or makes the player character fall through the map for eternity.

When it comes to games, the things we take for granted could easily have been very expensive to produce. It's the same with every studio. But I'm sure it costs more since each race has it's own skeleton and animation tree; unlike the majority of MMOs where every race shares the same skeleton and animations, that's vastly cheaper.
