Am sure it's something like that and we have to fight them again to obtain there essence. And I mean as summoner, not Free Company.
If im not mistaken, the lore for the primals states that they are actually "good" but have been corrupted in some way or another.
Perhaps the summoner quests will make you somehow cleanse the primals or separate their "good" part from their corrupted part, and then allow you to summon that small and weakened part (or as some have said, maybe putting it into some other vessel, like wind carby or some such)
Thoughts?

The Eorzean Alliance is fighting the Primals because they are the ones draining the aether from the planet, not the other way around. Primals require a shit-ton of aether to stay in corporeal form and the beastmen that worship them are providing that aether. The Alliance doesn't actually know how to harvest aether, they had been trading with the beastmen for years but the beastmen had recently stopped the trading process (Due to their gods demanding the crystals). The primals are considered evil by the humans and garleans. This is because they are the gods of the beastmen tribes that they fight against. The beastmen tribes summoned them as a way to defend themselves and the aether that people are taking from the planet. So the primals being good or evil is just a matter of perspective.
So no, the Primals are not corrupt and need to be cleansed, at least to the extent of our knowledge, they are just power hungry. (I.E. The reason mini Ifrit gets stronger is because Darnus shoots that aether blast and Ifrit absorbs it)

just saying
And they are not corrupted, they corrupt their summoners. Because of this the sylphs don't summon their primals because they fear it would make them like the other beastmen

@ryans youre right about the aether thing, i rechecked my cs. All i meant was that to anyone not of a beastribe, they are considered evil. Yet, they are worshipped by their respective tribes. So them being good or evil is just a matter of what side of the fence youre on.
Kinda reminds me of something pinhead says in hellraiser lol. "we are demons to some, angels to others"
Lmao it doesnt help their case though when ifrit has a bit of a superiority complex and garuda is bat shit crazy XD
The summoner is most certainly simpyl going to have 6 job quests just like the other jobs, and you'll fight small primal battles to obtain the summoner job abilities most likely.
I think it would be odd if you can't use Carbuncle as a Summoner. Mostly supposing they do a system like XI where you have to go out and fight the primals before you can summon them or do a summon quest, how would you be able to get things done? Sure you may have Debuff skills, and I'm sure that book can do a decent amount of damage.. probably not, but a summoner is nothing if they're not summoning.
I kind of took "only arcanist can summon carbuncle" to mean that carbuncle won't be a cross class ability, but that summoner could still use him. At least that is what I hope they mean, since I <3 the little blue squirrel.

Yes and I'm pretty sure the reason behind that is because carby is set for solo/small groups since it is tank or mage. This way they can set up all the summoner avatars as more dps/dot/debuff because summoner is the job and is for group play. At least that is how I see it to more define the class being solo/small group and job as being mid/full group play...
As for the summons themselves I'm sure they are actually going to be different summons and not just a carby with a different color... because you are taking a part of the primal to bring out an avatar of them and not the full thing.
The cat is bemused =-.-=
What gets me is if summoner isn't able to summon Carbuncle then that would mean that the whole set up for how classes and jobs work now will be changed drastically come 2.0. And I can safely say that will piss off several people, though I suppose it would define jobs more.
