There does seem to be a lot of misconception about the Wii U. As someone who works in a small (very small) business video game store, the Wii games sell the least between Wii, PS3, and 360. I also almost never see a teenager or older trade-in a Wii game.
I've also had a lot of customers ask me if the Wii U was some add-on for the Wii, they had no idea it was a whole brand new console, next-gen, etc. I'm assuming that Nintendo's decision to cling to the 'Wii' name for their next console is probably part of the reason why everyone assumes it's going to be just like the Wii. I know it's frustrating, but I think the Wii-U is gonna have to prove everyone wrong on its own. You're not going to be able to change that misconception until then.
