Summoner would not work with FFXIV current state.

Depending on how creative the development team gets they can do pretty much anything. Being a new game, a summoner type class would likely have different mechanics. I don't think you'd see it the way it was done in FFXI even if there were no lore issues.

That said summons haven't always been elementals. In FFIV or (FF2 in the USA) summoner more or less just summoned monsters. And, yes, there were the normal elemental spirits in FFXI. I think pretty much anything can be done with the class and still feel very summoner like.

Well ya I agree, if they do something along those lines it would work. What I am stating is the classic summons, Bahamut, Ifrit, Shiva, Odin, etc... Those would not work because of this games storyline. We would need different types of summons for summoner class to feel like it really belongs

Well in the storyline we are told w might have the power to summon bc we saw ifrit take mercy on us in the cutscene and then shortly later we get told we might have that ability in us as long as we continue to develop. Bahamut could have been the dragon in the openning video, and if we are at war with the garleans as the story is suggesting a possible future truce with dragonkin could allow us to access their spirits. So far the story is very open allowing the dev team to go in a number of directions.
