The Japanese seem either happy, or upset by the fact that non-jp players will still be allowed to access their servers. A couple of them are calling for total segregation. Here's their thread

I am pretty sick of the JP only stuff myself, I been kicked out of a couple exp parties by JP players when all I said was hi, "sorry JP only." Oh here is the funny part I actually am Japanese, but I am just Japanese American born and live in the US, don't know the language since I am 3rd generation. So basically they kicking out me who is the same race as them because I don't know the language. That is pretty frustrating in my opinion. The Japanese seem either happy, or upset by the fact that non-jp players will still be allowed to access their servers. Which is why I welcome playing on NA region servers.
Stop complaining, just join the same server as your friends....jees.
Thats how its currently set up. Currently, You join a random server which is located somewhere around the world. For all you know, you are connecting to a server in Japan. Only difference with the new system is the clear indication of where your server is located so you have the ability to join one closer. If you want to play with friends, then JOIN THE SAME SERVER that is located between you and your friends. Servers are all Global. If it wasn't you wouldnt be able to even join the server.
Most of French don't seems to care. Most of feedbacks are either positive, either neutral. Some people says "it's sad" or "too bad", but beside 1/2 comments there wasn't any real hostile feedbacks like on EN forums.
A good part of the FR forum base already made the choice to move to Ragnarok and is prepared to be on an EU server I believe.
Antipika.

I agree with Zumi. I recently met a group where they would rather yell 3 hours for a JP player rather than accepting a English Speaking player. Blows my mind. But dont get me wrong, there are the few that have been super helpful. One particular JP player literally helped us for 8 hours just because. They didint even need any of the items.

From what I am reading I think most people are upset about the fact that if you have friends in the game from various regions there is no way you can all play on the same server and be happy.
Most logical choice, pick a server closest to you for latency. Most unlikely choice, friends from all over the world decide on one server and all play despite latency issues.
I am glad FFXI isnt like this, I play in an EU Linkshell and have friends from Japan so its great that we are all playing in the same world. FFXIV I didnt really get the chance to meet many players from overseas, but I play usually during EU peak time so selecting a server in the USA would make the most sense for latency but may very well ruin my chance of doing anything with a pick up group.
I believe the development team is being either overly optimistic or arrogant about the amount of players joining up for the release of 2.0. I want the game to be successful but if these other world severs do not work do we really believe they will go back in and completely do this all over again? Unlikely. So if they dont get it right this time we probably wont get another chance.
This is true, sadly... I know why they doing it but this is the worst idea ever in terms of community. I love how currently every group of ppl all over the world work together. Some of my best friends in game are JP, or French and German.. going to lose a lot with this change. Community wholeness being one of them =(
And what if all of my friend quit the game and I'm left alone again? What if I'm left alone on a mostly JP server? I like the JP, but I can't speak nearly enough Japanese to get anything done. I do have bilingual friends, and honestly this is going to be a pretty depressing choice for them. In the long run I know I'll still be with the game because I'm too stubborn to leave even without friends, which is why I came back after half a year. If the EN-EU-JP ratio changes too dramatically in that time, I'll be screwed!Stop complaining, just join the same server as your friends....jees.

The only way to fix this is to let us change servers. In XI it cost a fee, which was fine to keep between-server smuggling to a minimum.
This is actually more or less what's happening on Durandal right now. US prime time, I see more JP shouts in hiragana(i think?) than english or Autotranslate shouts, that last for HOURS at a time. They won't even bother with english speakers.I agree with Zumi. I recently met a group where they would rather yell 3 hours for a JP player rather than accepting a English Speaking player. Apparently switching servers will be easier? and why you choose an alleged JP server in the first place?
