No. The internet is a magical place, but not that magical.
If you can convince some Japanese friends to make characters on NA shards, however, then yes... you could very much be on the same server with your JP friends while on a NA shard...
Grass is purple and Canada is on mars. I said it so its true. Just kidding. I guess you may have read he first page or so, but basically the thread is overwhelmingly one-sided.

I'm not upset about this course of action from SE, but I hope they reconsider.
I read the first 3 pages. It was definitely 2 sided. =/

No SE, please don't. Not gonna repeat what all my fellows said, so just
NO
There's nothing stopping people who are complaining about this from joining far away servers. Thats how its setup now anyway.
I'm only on the second page of posts (and yes, I'm pissed about this too) but what about being on the same server as friends? I don't want to have to use the content finder to hang out with the friends I made on Sargatanas if we're all going to be split up. What if I want to craft next to them while we chat?
does anyone know the Japanese response to the news? How about Germany and French?

I get the impression that some people believe this is a forced move.
IT IS NOT
You can choose to stay right where you are and so can your friends.
People that want to be on a closer server can move to one.
Everyone gets to make their own choice about their own situation.
Just as it should be.
