funny to see all these fights and disputes, bashing etc about this topic. im gonna chime in here also.
doesn't matter if its 1.0 or 2.0 THINGS ARE ONLY WORTH WHAT SOMEONE IS WILLING TO PAY! bottom line all bullshit put aside!
To prove this true, that things are only worth what someone is willing to pay im gonna back up with two reasons:
1 the amount of difficulty someone has to go through to obtain gil or currency
2 supply and demand
this applies to this game and in real life. example in game: you have a player that has to burn through many leves, dungeons, quests etc to earn gil they look on the wards/auction and see a cobalt celata selling and sells for on average 50k no melds and normal quality, then their is someone else selling the same exact one for 500k. which one will sell...? common sense right! even if the one for 50k sells and their are no more around that price but the one for 500k is still their, would that player buy it? or wait for supply and demand to take effect waiting for more to hit market and then can grab one for 50k? or being stupid and buying the one for 500k? or rather wait for the stubborn, hard headed person to lower the price. the players choice to buy the gear will always be heavily reflected by the difficulty to getting gil before supply and demand doesn't matter how you were brought up/raised you will always make a choice to purchase something based off how hard it was to earn money.(bottom line!) If the player can earn gil very easy why not buy the one for 500k who cares right? its easy to get gil. but if its hard to get gil the player will be like screw that, f*** that, suck my d***, etc. because their is no way they will spend alot if it was very hard to get whatever they have. if the player can get gil easily would they really wait for the only guy selling the gear for 500k to lower his price or just buy it?
Same goes for a person in real life they are looking for a car to buy and see a blue sedan selling for 20k at one dealer and the same exact kind of blue sedan at another dealer for 15k which one will they buy? You know the answer... but lets change it to were there is only one dealer selling the blue sedan and hes lists it for 50k, now you have to work for minimum wage which is very difficult to get money together are you gonna wait and buy the car for 50k or will you buy a cheaper knock off somewhere else, or will you wait until the stubborn dealer lowers the price since no one is buying to finally get the car? now change it to were you had plenty on money which is easy to earn would it matter if you paid 15k at one dealer or 20k at another...wouldn't matter since money is easy for you to obtain. even if their is only one dealer selling the car for 50k if money is no object or easy to come by is it going to be a big deal? would you really wait for the stubborn dealer to lower the price?
funny thing in these post is that ppl complain who looses more(rich or poor), technically speaking in one manner yes from a dollar stand point if someone has 100 million and looses 90mil or another person had 2mil and looses 1.8mil from that view yes. The other is a % stand point everyone looses 90% what they previously had so really we all have the same purchasing power as before like some have already stated. in 2.0 prices will drop since ppl only have so much gil available, no matter how stubborn or hardheaded someone is not lowering their prices accordingly come 2.0 nothing they have will sell unless they adjust properly like some have said. who will buy items, gear etc in 2.0 at 1.0 prices when they have only 1/10 of gil available prior to 2.0?
yoshi p already stated that in 2.0 all across the board difficulty in obtaining gil will be increased. either its from leves, dungeons, quests, farming mobs etc. gil is gonna have to be earned(no more massive rewards anymore) there will be no loop holes(hopefully). And NO farming mobs will not work either if someone does it to npc items, or sell them on wards/auction house or use them to craft then sell gear its quite clear farming will not work just like grinding on mobs for levels, straight from yoshi p himself.
Its for the best by SE, current players and newcomers that this happens... you all know why and already talked about why it should happen. new players have no chance to start, inflation, etc etc.
Stanley that's pretty much what a lot of us are saying yet some people aren't comprehending that at all even when given examples their brains are screaming, "NO THAT'S NOT TRUEEEEE THAT'S IMPOSSIBLE!" (now imagine that with Luke Skywalker's voice .... i've watched Empire strikes back too many times..) Basically they're not wanting to see fact as it is and taking it as a personal affront to them because how dare Yoshi-P try to do something that will help the overall economy of the game

To those who dislike this change, what do you think would happen if they instead made the cap increased by one decimal?
You would change 10 mil to 100 mil
but that 100 mil would come with it a huge inflation. More money? higher prices.
case in point: Atomos farming.
Effectively printing money.
^ The scenario above is exactly the same as what Yoshi-P plans to do for us, in every way except how complex a larger $ amount is. That's it.

really? you mean just lower the ceiling and hope those with 100+ mil dont accidentally forget to transfer to retainer? that would be a huge PR mistake. and the inflation still runs rampant regardless. stuff would still cost 45m, gil would be just as easy to earn, people would just hit cap faster.
Where does future growth occur?
Please consider how your suggestion is actually way more complex than SE handing you a million dimes for your 10 million pennies. The wealth you have does not change, merely the value of each individual gil.
Earning 1 million gil in 2.0 will be exactly as difficult as earning 10 million gil right now. (ignoring the Atomos factor)
