I have two ideas that are definitely post-2.0 suggestions but I couldn't help putting them forward now.
I was thinking the other day about how I wish there were more lore "books" in the game that I could read for lore, such as the books available in the Thaumaturge guild. Another example would be the history lessons that you can unlock from the NPC Erik in Ul'dah.
Finding this kind of stuff is difficult, but fun, interesting, and rewarding when you come across it.
My suggestion is basically adding a bookshelf to the inn rooms that will fill up with books as players collect them. The books would be obtained via quests, purchased from various NPCs, or even drops or rewards for certain content. There could be an achievement for getting all of them, even.
This would be a way for players to build on their experience (if they chose to) while allowing the devs to put lore information into the game that would otherwise be hard to place. Histories of various guilds, nations, organizations, etc. It would really flesh out the world and give it depth.
The bookshelf would only need to function as a dialogue box, the same way the current examples do. Adding more books to the shelf would add more options with dialogue to the list.
The other suggestion I have is implementing the Lodestone newspapers into the game. So far we have seen NPCs and GMs representing the news reporters for The Harbor Herald, The Mythril Eye, and The Raven. What if the latest issue of these papers was available to read in game, as an object in the Inn? What I am suggesting is a simple, clickable newspaper that when you click on it, gives you the option to view past/latest issues of the lore newspapers. Of course, you would only get Issues of The Harbor Herald in Limsa-Lominsa, and the same for the other three cities!
Those are my suggestions. Any thoughts?
