I think they did a good job at lasting, while we appear to be spiraling downward pretty fast. The longest we can survive, (on earth anyway) is about 5 billion years which would be a feat if we did it. I say this because in about 5 or so billion years, it's estimated the earth will crash into the sun. Though if we DO manage to live that long, I'd hope we had developed technology to get to one of the Gleise planets that have been discovered, or at least find a way to move every human possible onto a self-sustaining colony in space.

Actually, when the sun goes through its final phases, it's going to expand and engulf Earth and several of the other planets, then shrink before imploding into a black hole.
