The Classes in XIV are not the same as Job Classes from old FF's they are named after their weapons. In the case of Mages, Thaumaturge's main weapon is Cone AOE magic Casting, while Conjurers is Circle AOE magic Casting. Thats why all the classes have weird name. Gladiator is literally Latin for "Sword User" as is Lancer for "The User of Lances" and Pugilist "One who fights with Fists"

They are Weapon Classes, but you build the Traditional Job Classes out of them by mixing and matching your skills. I do support them implementing the Traditional Names, but it should be as a Title system where you select the title of say "Thief" it gives you access to a small number of Thief Only skills and gives you a bonus for using skills from all the weapons that are Thief Friendly.
