I don't want it to be pointless, but I would like to have a use for TP as a mage.

I don't honestly see the point in giving mages weaponskills (save for jobs like RDM who are actually setup for melee combat) outside of soloing, and even then, given that you typically want to keep your distance from enemies.
The way I see it, if the WHM is forced to go and whack stuff, you're probably up the creek without a paddle. It doesn't really fit from a flavor standpoint either - your'e supposed to be a class/job that has spent all their time training in magic - your weapons are designed for enhancing your abilities, not martial warfare - that's why we have DoW.
This isn't XI - get over it.
I think I was just raging after seeing the new battle system they plan on implementing and how they are changing weaponskills and combos. I also don't like that TP regenerates like MP and that you can do a weaponskill right off that bat, at start of a fight. To me, it cheapens the feel of the weaponskill. Plus didn't they already completely revamp the battle system? I mean like actions, combos, weaponskills, and many other aspects....ect BR, enimity..How would it ruin anything? Did weaponskills ruin mages in FFXI? no, they didn't. Most of them weren't very useful, but there were some that had situational benefits. Are you afraid that mages won't cast spells anymore or something? Magic would always be their main focus. But it's silly to even have a TP bar at all if it can never be used for anything.
Stop being so goddanged resistant to change. The game is going to transform radically for 2.0- it's not just a bugfix update. Accept it or move on.
If you're soloing, odds are you're taking hits, which means your MP regen is already garbage. Mage weaponskills would most likely do things like recover MP anyway, so this wouldn't be a problem. They could always change it so active mode doesn't hinder MP recovery.
As far as being resistant to change is concerned, I've played beta, played since around launch, and have played almost everday since then. (besides when servers went down for tsunami =( )I've been one of those rere players that thoroughly enjoyed the game, even given the continuous amount of changes per patch, and have only ever had small gripes about some changes, but I got used to them eventually. I absolutely love the current system and it would be a shame if they destroyed something I feel they did a great job in changing/revamping. There are many older players that have recently came back on my server (since the flood of 2.0 info) that thoroughly enjoy the new battle/combo system....I know it would turn me off of the game, and would ruin my immersion if it was changed to operate like any other throw away f2p mmo.
^to add. Not sure why I was raging about weaponskills on mages. FFXI did have them, and tbh I remember shocking random parties being whm and melee'ing with my weapon and doing weasponskills. Also at one point, FFXIV had weaponskills, it wasn't all that bad.
It was funny to use PGL WS on my THM in the old days.
Yep, my friend did a whm tank once.
Shadowfall was very good before SE nerfed the Thaumaturge physical attack.

I really liked the stamina gauge concept and hell, I even liked the original ATB-type system they had in alpha. But I don't miss either of those things any more. It will just take a little time to get used to whatever changes are made, then you'll forget how you felt about the previous setup.I think I was just raging after seeing the new battle system they plan on implementing and how they are changing weaponskills and combos. Well, DoM arms used to do magical damage with their attacks (the different brands and wands would do different elements in damage), then they changed them all to be blunt and also nerfed the hell out of it. There was really no reason to destroy that. It's not like it overshadowed spellcasting- I liked it because you had more options than the current 2 combos you ever use setup on BLM.was very good before SE nerfed the Thaumaturge physical attack.
