As long as gearscore doesn't make it impossible to find a group, the problem in wow became you needed a higher gearscore than the gear you would get from the run you were doing.

So I remember trying to do a pug group in wow, this group required x gearscore but the raid didn't even drop gear that would add up to that gearscore.

Or you start coming into link your achievement for this boss, no achievement you can't go. This got so bad that you couldn't get the achievement because nobody would take you to get it.

Gearscore to me was the worst thing that ever happened to wow, or if it is in any mmo. I know there isn't a good way to judge a players skills, other than base it off gear or achievements but what about players who come back after a long break.

I could be in regular blues and a few epics and still pull higher dps than the other hunters in my group, yet they didn't want to take me because my gear wasn't all epic, but I did 2nd highest dps...

Sometime you get someone who got carried through all the content and they have really good gear, but they are the worst players in the would, I had one hunter come in and just auto attack the whole fight. I tried to tell him a simple rotation to help his dps and he told me not tell him how to play.
