I think it'd be a great idea if no one else could see your gear score without you telling them. It'd be nice to just have it available only to the player, to enhance the sense of progression.

On the other hand I don't like the thought of other people using it to determine my worth as a player. It would get annoying quick, especially knowing some of the snobbier people in game.

It's a good tool for content finder if it's implemented correctly, but it should be a personal thing and not displayed by default.

What makes me sad about gear score is that it was originally implemented in WoW as a means of determining how player stats affected vehicles in raid encounters and PvP. The demolishers and siege tanks' health pools were determined by the ilvl of the driver's equipment. The addons then were developed to help raid leaders determine who to put on the driver's seat. That it turned into another dimension of e-peen measuring was an unintended consequence.

    * The sad thing is that FFXIV turned RDM into a turret, and people think that's what it's supposed to be. It's supposed to combine sword and magic into something more, not spend the bulk of gameplay spamming spells and jump into melee for only 3 GCDs before scurrying back to the back line like good little casters.

    Interesting thought, Duelle.

Since WoW's gear score system was intended for a specific content and then misused by the community, that kinda puts my mind at better ease. FFXIV doesn't have any content like that. It's Gear Score system likely will be far different than that used by WoW.

    Really nice feature.

Guess i can finally filter all these noobs without actually having to look at their equipment.

Considering I had so much fun with vehicle combat that I'd want to see that here (we have magitek floating around, so I definitely want vehicle combat in some capacity), I think it's only as matter of time.

I am against it, as I have noticed a recent rise in elitists who wont invite you along for simple content like dungeon raids or skirmish unless you have all double-melded gear.

I can see the 'benefits' of it, but the fact that it will most assuredly just turn elitists into even bigger elitists is just not worth it for me. I am very much against elitism. Its a game...play it and let others play it. Someone without double-melds isn't REALLY going to hold you back.

I could not have said it better myself. In fact only use it for content finder should have no restrictions what so ever so players can do swimsuite runs or naked runs. Leave it up to player to choose what they want to do goof around. Content finder would require a gearscore Que up.

A well implemented gear system should not be algorithmically possible to determine a score...

god I would hate to see gear tiers more than anything

I want gear to be situational, maybe during this event you need to stack gear with elemental resistances, or MP regen, or "Healing spell recast time minus" or something like that.

    1) it gives more total pieces of gear to strive for far beyond one overarching set of pieces that you just throw away as you upgrade and 2) it brings strategy into preparation, not just execution (like in FFVII rearranging your Materia before a boss battle, or FFXIII setting up different paradigms that might work better for a certain boss)

Gearscore in WoW worked because each slot was based on an algorithm to determine how many stats it has.

Example Ilvl 110 would be weighted for 300 stats, and Ilvl 120 for 330, etc (or 110 and 120). AGI = 1 point, 2 Attack = 1 point etc. But Ilvl 110 bracers and 110 chest wouldn't have the same # of stats (Chest would have more, stronger piece)

FFXIV gear currently doesn't seem to operate on any linear function currently other than weapon's seem to Tier off of DPS but their bonus attributes seem to just be randomly added as a set function.

They already have a tier function in the game (Max Level Tier4 materia's compared to each other can determine relative gear weight) to determine the worth of each gear piece but as I said currently SE doesn't seem to follow any function when weighing the stats on each gear piece.

That would have to change if they wanted to use any form of gearscore that matters for well, anything.
