Why would the game being down for months so they can transfer character data and fully focus on 2.0 lose players? What exactly do you think they owe you?
Entitlement. FFXI and FFXIV faded to nothing and lost every player as people stated it would after the disaster knocked Japan out for awhile. It didn't? Such a shocker.

It had just the opposite effect IMHO, I had no drive to play either of those games before that and after they brought it down I just felt hollow on the inside knowing even if I wanted to i could not play it. When it resumed i was back in full force on both games along with many others who did not log in for weeks/months prior to that downtime.

I hear the Game Servers were still running in japan even though everything was powered down.... No doubt Yoshi used the Man Powered Wheel to keep our data from reverting while the servers were safely shutdown either that or he recruited over 1400 marmots per server to keep them running.

I thought they made the reasoning behind leaving the lights on a little longer rather clear. They understand that Final Fantasy XIV is more than just a game, but a place for its community to gather. Gamewise, yes, it's fruitless to level up if none of it's going to be saved. But for anyone who does any form of socializing in-game, it makes a little more sense.
I don't see the harm in leaving the lights on for those who'd get any use out of it. You can't argue that it'll make ARR take longer to get here because they also clearly stated that after the final save, all support for the old structure is done and gone. They might be paying someone over there on the physical end to make sure the hardware doesn't catch on fire and to "turn it off and back on again" when needed, but as far as the dev team goes, they said no more patches, support, etc.

Play something else?

@ OP it's not how many chars they have to transfer it's the fact they would have to transfer your character, if they did that and let you get more stuff and save your data again they would have to this every single time, over and over and over. So just DEAL WITH IT.
"what he hell" why are you crying about it are a 10-17 year old that is still living at home with mom and dad you think you know every thing and your always right and you entitled to everything in 14 se has done a lot to this game the reason why they are considering the option of allowing us to play on the old servers if we all agree that what we do after the final save wont be ported is that they know it will take months of porting that saved stuff on nov 1 and we should be relly thank full that they arnt going to delet our chars which they could of done so grow upSo basically, I can keep playing if I want, but anything I accomplish will be gone. I think not. You're going to lose a massive amount of players saying either a) you can't play for 2 months, particularly over the holiday when a lot of people have time off, or b) you can play, but we're just going to wipe out anything you accomplish.
It should not be that hard to migrate character data to the new system. People that play want to keep playing. I log in and fish in my spare time, or level some jobs, ie make progress in the game. That is completely pointless if you're just going to wipe it. It's like playing FF1 half way through, then the battery in your cartridge dies and you have to start over.
There has to be another way.

I'd rather have them reactivate my XI account while XIV is down :P
