I don't really care what you like to call it. Same thing, different name. The point is it looks terrible, and it is one of the many little reasons I don't play other MMOs.
In simple terms:
"My character moves 'weird' .. I don't like this."

Ah you got that wrong there son. Let me break it down for you:Unfortunately they have not confirmed or denied backpedaling and strafing. They are simply blatant in the pre-alpha Video. It is very obvious that they have implemented "Standard" Western MMO controls which will mean A turns left it stead of runs left and D does the same to the right. S will backpedal instead of turn around and the Camera will have basicly no manual control.
Current controls:
W: Run Forward, inertia stop
A: Run Left
D: Run Right
S: Run toward the camera, with inertia stop & go animation (really nice)
New controls:
W: Run Forward (removal of inertia stop animation)
A: Strafe Left (removal of running animation)
D: Strafe Right (removal of running animation)
S: Backstep at 1/2 speed. (removal of stop & go animation and ability to face the camera)
Mouse key held down and moved left/right: Change running direction left/right (replaces previous A and D key function)
For those unfamiliar with this change-up, it makes it really annoying to view the front of your character. You have to manually move the camera all the way around to face your character, and then if you move it's very awkward so you have to move the camera all the way back around to the back. I think the habit of a lot of players now is to view their characters from the front and while they're hanging out with others they're used to being able to walk left, right, and towards the camera. In the new version you're not going to be able to do that and it's going to be a lot less enchanting.

What you don't play to games if there is strafing in them ?
You cannot be serious !
What about 2D games ?
Someone should go and play 1.0 and check out the movements while locked on the target.
I get the feeling almost every single Poster in this Thread never played 1.0 with "Target lock" mode. People act like we don't have strafing and "Sideway Walking" at all. And people actually forget that we had way worse Animations back when 1.0 was released, which got fixed over time.
What worries me about this isn't the fact that they are removing the 2 step inertia animation, it's the fact that they're making it like a 3rd person shooter... say for example you are at ifrit and theres a pt member a few yalms in front and a plume pops under you..in order to run backwards you have to swing the camera around 1st then run? or you will end up back pedaling and die? i guess kiting is out of the question now too?Ah you got that wrong there son. I unlock the target when walking/running "sideways" or "backwards" (so I'm not actually running sideways or backwards, I'm turning and running in a different direction). It looks better, more realistic, and I feel I move faster. :3Someone should go and play 1.0 and check out the movements while locked on the target.

I will die a little inside if I don't have that in 2.0, (the ability to turn and run in a different direction, rather than walking slowly backwards).

I really sympathise with this. If the animations are as shown in this video there is a big chance i wont feel like playing anymore. It looks way too bad to even take seriously anymore.Character movement in this video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LM6bi4RP25o
just looks very stiff and unrealistic.. and yes, awkward. (Watch specifically at 0:26 - 0:29, he's kind of slide-walking sideways and backwards). I really really hope this is not what it's going to look like in 2.0. They have to improve this, right? >.>
I was really looking forward to 2.0, but honestly, for me my CHARACTER is the most important thing in game for me, (second being storyline, and third how the world looks.)
If something isn't right about my character, how they move, look, feel.. I just don't play the game. It's as simple as that.
This is actually a game-breaking thing to me. It looks really bad. I'm disappointed and worried.
I will be really sad to see my characters ruined if it's not fixed.
The backpedaling, sideways-walking, and slide-walking is such an eye-sore.
I would gladly wait an extra month (hell, or two) to play the game if they would make character movement look as nice as it does in the current game.
That is the whole point of this thread man.. Camera lock should be 100% optional. We should not be forced to strafe and backpedal just so SE can implement bad Western MMO controls. And they definitely should not remove everything remotely close to good movement animations so they can do it.Someone should go and play 1.0 and check out the movements while locked on the target.

You dont feel you move faster, you actually do.![]()
But still.. we have that "weird" looking Animations right now, so i dont get all that complaining about it. Iirc they said in the last Show/Interview that the Battle Animations are not done and they did not want to show it yet, so i don't know... All people talk about in this Threads are actually the Battle-Animations, no?
I guess the Dev's were more refering to the Animations where you lean to the Side you are running to, which were missing in the Demo.
I doubt the current Ifrit fight would be in the game as-is. Running backward is too awkward for these new controls. There might still be Eruption-like mechanics but you would probably dodge them by running forward, not backward or to the side. I think if they port the Ifrit fight they might take away the Eruption target mechanic because if you run forward you would just kill the tank. What worries me about this isn't the fact that they are removing the 2 step inertia animation, it's the fact that they're making it like a 3rd person shooter... say for example you are at ifrit and theres a pt member a few yalms in front and a plume pops under you..in order to run backwards you have to swing the camera around 1st then run? or you will end up back pedaling and die? i guess kiting is out of the question now too?
