No. Poor client and server design can get you killed. I've yet to get killed by animations in any online game with an optimized client and server infrastructure.

They Removed Animation lock, because it was becoming a major hassle with the primal fights.
They could have gotten rid of the lock while retaining animations, also:

plumes pop..
Unless you're kiting Ifrit (Hard) for some reason, you should never be in a plume spot as it's pretty predetermined.
