Yeah, XIV really was the first MMO I played with realistic enemies...but people hated it because it wasn't what x generic MMORPG did and they wanted it changed.Tell me about it - it's a pattern we've been seeing since Yoshida came in. Yeah, yeah, lay into me all you like and of course some things have unconditionally improved, but I miss so much the realistically proportioned wildlife, 'hitching' on entities rather than just ghosting through them like they aren't there, and non-combat actions for creatures like warning postures, watching, and so forth.
I just hope they keep that promise made by the rep's a while back to reinstate target-oriented emotes come v2.0. Somehow I get the nasty feeling they plan on trying to sweep that under the carpet.

It's a rather silly thing to complain about at this point. I can understand why someone could be bothered by that animation change, or "lack" but it's sort of selfish to be that annoyed over something that (many) would consider completely trivial when most of us have a much longer agenda of things we'd rather see addressed.
I absolutely hate the feeling of being a big ball of rubber attached to a bunch of rubber bands that is XIV (it's gotten better but damn).
The dark souls comparisons are rather amusing, that game is very much not an mmo and it's striving for that realistic feel. It does it well, and everyone should love it when they are playing DS. But in an mmo I don't feel it's a necessity, it's more of an inconvenience.

I have a feeling I know the reason behind these complaints. Seeing your character move very slightly with realistic weight gives you the feeling of not just controlling something alive, but of being that character.
Therefore, I propose that the loss of the realistic movements, if it happens, would be a big one, but would be less of an issue than the loss of our current "target enemy and your head turns to look at them with the eyes following them independent of the head" mechanic.
Just that one thing is what I've finally nailed down as being the biggest thing that differentiates this game from GW2 (along with how the camera is placed). It makes you feel like you're truly there, and adds a level of empathy to the character that very few other games have managed to do.
Anyway, just my opinion. Continue on.

Oh definitely. If detailed character attention tracking remains, especially if they really do keep their promise to re-implement target-oriented emotes, then I'll certainly be consoled even if I am pushing for keeping the present levels of detail in the larger-scale animations as well.I have a feeling I know the reason behind these complaints. On the other hand if that were removed as well.. urgh >.>; It's not a concern to readily dismiss, either. We got that because it happened to be a design feature of Crystal Tools, so...

This is truthfully the only thing that scares me. It took me ages to figure out just what about GW2 wasn't sitting right with me, and I finally narrowed it down to just this one mechanic. Now that we've had it for so long, I HATE not having it. I'd still play the game of course, but its loss would really hurt me.Oh definitely. The loss of things such as Realistic Character movement and Wild Creature Emotes/Behavior is not a little thing. It's the biggest loss an MMO can experience. The Development team has to set the standard now for the level of detail they want in this world. Things like content and new mechanics will constantly be added as the game progresses, but walking is never going to get remade. Things like Enemy AI will not be repeatedly upgraded. The Level of Detail that persists in the world must be secured at the Start of the world.
The belief that important things could be upgraded at a later date is what lead to Final Fantasy XIV.
If 1.xx was so awesome, why are they revamping it?
In the alpha and beta test, we can test walking and running more thoroughly..

I just hope they remove the damned animation lock we BLM/WHM get when trying to stop a cast and run away so we dont get trapped in AoE range or on top of cracks -_-, every Blm can atest to falling dead from that during Ifrit and I hope the new data centers help with the horrible ping time. I know I have a 1~1.5 sec lag from the Ifrit doing cracks to when I see it underneath me. for F@#$ sakes I see the Moogles on mini map 2 sec's before the appear on screen sometimes even longer
I don't think its much of a downgrade if any at all, I know the its useless for me to see how the area darkens after the person next to me casts a spell, I can see the spell going off no need to see the whole area affected by it. One thing I don't see on the pre-alpha is all of the glow effects that are in the game currently, it looks more "realistic" would be the word I guess
