I remember reading this thread. I'm still horrified at the small cuts that are being made to the game. The motion blending was one of my favorite parts about 1.0.

Hm. Hm.
But I stand by my theory that it's being done to allow the game to run on the PS3. Friggin' consoles...
But that doesn't mean SE won't do the right thing and release a high-res texture pack for PC. They've already said they plan to explore the possibility of releasing an SDK, so even if they don't, maybe someone else will.
The bottom line is the engine itself looks solid. Poly counts and texture resolutions are easy as long as the engine is good.

The hacker/maker crowd will definitely deliver on the SDK end.Hm. Hm.

I really liked the animations from 1.0 but if they've been changed/removed for ARR I'm sure the devs have a valid reason to do so. If there is a way to include them for ARR without jeopardising the gameplay (lag, animation lock) then I'm all for it.
No. They made the choice to just because. Anyone who's done any design work would know if the animations truly were a problem due to the engine (which it wasn't suited for MMOs) being on a new engine wouldn't contain those same issues if it's built specifically for a game.
They removed quite a bit just because. The funny part is, if you look around the net at unofficial videos you can see something that'd lock the hell out of you in 1.0 that doesn't in ARR, so animation lock and lag didn't come from the animations or graphics, it came from the way the game was designed and the fact the crystal tools engine was not designed for MMOs, just like XI was said to be built on an engine from the ground up which shows seeing as it didn't have any of the problems XIV suffered in terms of core design.
@PS3:
No, the PS3 wouldn't limit animation blending at all.
I know we're discussing the animations, but at no point did they say they would never ever return. In fact I actually recall reading that inertia was removed simply because for the moment they wanted to and that it was more or less implied such animations would return.
Eeyup. I even remember reading somewhere that Yoshi-P said the majority of character animations are still missing in the alpha, and in fact there will be more animations in ARR than in 1.x.
And again, we're gonna be getting an SDK at some point, so people can create their own animations if they think the game doesn't have enough.
And SE...you could make that stuff real easy if you sell FFXIV on Steam and add Steam Workshop support...

They did say that the blending animations are not implemented yet but I don't remember reading anything about ARR having more animations than 1.0. I'm not saying it's not true but if you remember please do post the source, I'd like to read it.
