Sure you can, as people can do it with an alt. But don't expect people playing from 2 years will toss everything in the pit just because is new

That is your decision. If you have too much to catch up on in FFXIV 1.0, then I don't see why you would have to start over in 2.0. If you want a brand new character, then go for it, otherwise, new payment plan = more characters and you can make a new one if you want to start over while you keep progress on Darko Strife.
