I still hate the Ifrit weapons and think they clash with the games overall art direction, even in 2.0 based on what I've seen.

Also, this whole "if you don't like it, don't do it" think is a little shallow minded. We're still dealing with it, there are players everywhere in love with their space bars and that's part of the problem. If I could see a little momentum in the jumps, like knees bending down after you hit the ground from such a tall height, or if the jumps had a little variety in the animations when you did them each time I'd be fine.

Heck, someone had an idea to let people who didn't want it to block the animation, bet that idea was shot down by the community for being an unnecessary addition to the development, or too bothersome to watch people walk through things, as if that mattered to the people who didn't want to see jumping, as if I haven't seen people walk through crap over the past 2 years.

    But I'll find a way.

We're on a board about FFXIV, It shouldn't be out of the question to critically talk about it at length.

Honestly, this is pretty funny. I thought about jumping and thought I'd ask and see what the general consensus is. Came back to this a few days later and suddenly 13 pages? Welp, guess I owe it to the posters to read all of them.

For those who think I am trolling: I am not. The OP was in the form of a question, and I don't see how that meant that I was trying to encroach on your rights as a human being. As for the dead horse thing... well, I did a search for "jump" and "jumping" and saw nothing of relevance initially, so I thought I'd make a quick post. Not everyone surfs these forums. Interestingly, there is apparently still enough to speak of on the subject to justify 13 pages. Evidently some of us enjoy deceased equine violence as a pastime. Or at least... some of us enjoy trash talking in threads as a pastime.

I do think that animation realism is a nice thing to have. I really like the momentum animations in the current version of the game. From what I saw of the gameplay videos for ARR, they seem to either have been removed or are currently absent. That is unfortunate. Small touches like that help with immersion, whether you actively realize it or not. We all enjoy various aspects of the game, and I think it would be a shame if we can't all voice our opinions on those aspects. It is funny that people seem to think that there is some sort of priority on people's thoughts. Someone had to spend time to program these animations in the game that we all play. Heck, even the grass had to have been made by someone, decisions were made at every step of implementation. A game with polish looks better precisely because someone out there cared about the small stuff. No one wanted to replace all the "important" threads with posts about jumps and grass. But if these super serious threads do exist... why are all of you guys posting in this one?

What is perhaps most telling... is the difference in tone between the two sides on this issue. Whereas one, while completely NOT opposed to jumping whatsoever, is asking for possible options to improve its aesthetics, the other side is full of nothing but knee jerk reactions, snide remarks and taunts. Jumping is here to stay, and that is a great thing. But why stop there? Why not ask for some polish? ARR is here precisely because people spoke their minds. Why stop now?

Then you haven't been in enough topics about jumping if you believe this.

Do I really need to? There's literally like 12 pages of exactly what I described right HERE. But here's the really important thing: just because last time this topic was brought up you had a bad experience does not somehow give you the right to be preemptively unkind without provocation.

How did this thread go from tweaking the jump animation to "JUMP VS NO JUMP!!! GRRRR!!"

Jump is in whether anyone likes it or not. Let's just give them our input on how we think the jump could work. The could listen but they don't have to. But as I said before, a little feedback can go a long way.
Of course I have utmost faith in SE on making the jumping feel natural. FFXI and FFXIV are the only games where I feel like the characters have some meat to them. They aren't just shells that are controlled by a player. The characters feel lifesize and alive. That's one of the best things about SE's MMOs. Please allow us to help them keep that going.

Well it's one thing to make the characters jump animation feel natural and another to put a delay on the jump because some think its annoying or "take away the ff-ness". I don't think anyone here wants jump that looks like jump in Skyrim but putting a delay on jump is not the way to go. Putting delay on things other than cooldown on ws and abilites should stay as far away from ffxiv as possible. The current version have gotten such a bad image because of all the delay in stuff like the interface and ws execution, I don't think we need that shit in jump. But I doubt anyone is against making the animation look natural, and really, there is a delay in jump, you still have to get back on the ground before you can jump again. It's not like you can spam jump and hover in the air.

Makes sense. I think as long as the animation looks natural between jumps, delay should be avoided as a mechanic to prevent jump spamming. If anything, delay should only be used to allow for a transition from one jump to the next. For example, after first contact with the ground again, the character needs a split second to bend the knees a bit (to absorb the jump) before being able to jump again.
On top of that, simply switching from a 2 footed jump to a 1 footed jump might make it so that no delay is needed at all. Really, I just want them to avoid it looking like the character randomly leaves the ground without any thrust in the legs. This seems difficult to do without even a little bit of delay to allow for an animation.
Many MMOs out there today have such a crappy looking jump. If SE can improve on this somehow without affecting the gameplay for everyone, than I'd be extra happy about it.

EDIT: I just remembered it was Champions Online that had jumping as a major skill (jumping from building to building) and it felt incredibly natural because it was one footed jumps.

Exactly. My OP never actually said anything about delay at all. I was simply bothered by the two leg squat while floating in the air animation that also lost you no forward momentum while running. If I jumped like that while running, I would lose momentum. It does not matter if I am some sort of parkour master.

It feels very jarring to see someone squat, rise into the air, and then land all while maintaining the exact speed as someone who simply kept running forward. I suggested adding a slight hit to forward momentum to compensate for landing animation when you jump so that jumping while moving is not something that is encouraged to happen constantly (while feeling more weighted). This does not mean so much of a hit that you'd come to a standstill, or anything even close to it. You'd still be encouraged to jump over obstacles because it would still save you time. You would, however, not be able to jump all the way somewhere on flat ground and get there just as fast as someone else who did not.
