Totally agreex.x I long for the day of a true front line spell sword and if given the right abilities, a rdm could be an excellent addition to the front line battles! Possibly they can give themselves aura buffs that extend to the pt
And don't blame SE for what happened to rdm...<_< I mean...look at what happened to nin

I preffer both.

Musketeer come after Arcanist i hope. Then SAM/NIN and at last RDM.
RDM could be like Sage in Ragnarok. Enchant his weapon with an element for the extra dmg. Like Monk, but without MP cost over time.
Oh, and the ability to cast during running of course ^^

Red Mages key ability is going to have to be the fact is uses melee attacks.
You have White Mage that can DD if it wants with spells, it can enfeeble, and it can heal. How different could Red Mage be in the current system of abilities. Yes they are being redone for 2.0, but nothing has been said about the dumb 15 amility limit being taken away.
Because of the current system I don't want to see a new enfeeble class, I'd rather these an all-purpose DD caster, not one that specializes in one field.
I was thinking Smn could do that, but who knows. 4 magic users that can Heal, DD, and enfeeble... so do better than others but only situationally. Need more variety.

So long as RDM is what RDM should be - average at melee, average at healing, average at magic DD with no high end spells. It should be the Jack of all trades - not the King, not even the Queen.
doop doop

It should shiny when the healer goes down, or the black mage is down, or the melee goes down.

Summoner. Red mage can come later. Summoner brings a lot of unique gameplay aspects that are absent from the game currently. Red mage wouldn't introduce anything particularly exciting at this point.

Kind of a silly remark as FFXI nailed the FF Red Mage persona to a tee. Able to cast white & black magic, to wield a sword and shield, had def and offensive melee properties. All this while still maintaining it not being as strong as the jobs it borrowed from.I don't want to see a XI RDM, it would also be redundant. A fightign class mage with out nukes but magic enhanced abilties, enfeebs and party support while engaged in malee would be better, then yes, I arathr they make a job like that then another hashed mage back job. Make BLM BLM, and forget about Arch
If FFXIV2.0 had Red Mage in it, it would have to be the same exact thing... As that is what a Red Mage is. You say "redundant" because this is one of the few companies to release a sequel mmo for the same franchise. Using the same lore and Jobs and species for the foundation of that lore is standard. An original story plot is the only thing that needs to be new. So you can't say using the same jobs from the FF universe is redundant...specifically "I dont want to see ffxi red mage" when that red mage is the same red mage from FF1.
as taken fromt he wiki:
Red Mages typically cast both Black and White Magic and can also wield swords and equip armor that normal Black and White Mages cannot. They are, in essence, among the more versatile characters of the series. However, their versatility comes at a price: their stats are usually low, and they cannot cast higher level spells or use stronger equipment. They can learn many spells, but not the strongest, and equip some heavy armor, but not all of it.
Thus, the Red Mage is a jack-of-all-trades, but a master of none. In certain games, Red Mages have a special ability such as Dualcast which boosts their spell casting efficiency. The standard Red Mage attire consists of red, black, and white clothing, including a red cloak with white or black trimmings, black boots and a red cap with a white feather.
Thus the fact remains:

I would have liked to see red mage first, or even blue; however, I can't argue with them bringing in another more magic focused job.
