I always disliked the idea of getting experience when finding new places. If you go around exploring it should be for the sake/fun of it.
You'll find these "get rewarded for exploring" mechanisms in other games. In Skies of Arcadia, you can report your discoveries in the world's vast skies to the guild in Sailor Island, and get money rewards depending on the rarity of the discovery (some are only observed in very specific conditions). In Xenoblade Chronicles, you get experience points for finding landmarks in addition to the discovery allowing you quick teleportation points.

These are honestly just incentives to go out and discover things, especially in odd places that may be tricky to reach. I think this is also coherent with the fact that your character would actually learn new things from visiting new places, and become a better, wiser person thanks to it. It's experience.

Experience points. Get it? Whodathunkit.
