While people are rallying and screaming "We've waited for two years already", I'm to the point a lot of other people seem to be at, where we are of the mind that this process will take exactly as long as it needs to.
Yoshi-P is aware of the vast multitude of reasons XIV 1.0 fell flat on it's face, which includes a rushed release. He's doing his best to make sure things are as stable and polished as he can before re-releasing the game.
The last thing the game needs is a shady gameplay video and a release date earlier than the producer feels is reasonable.

This is quite the simplistic answer for a much more complex matter. While people are rallying and screaming "We've waited for two years already", I'm to the point a lot of other people seem to be at, where we are of the mind that this process will take exactly as long as it needs to.

FF:ARR isn't a new MMORPG. They specifically decided to continue FF14 instead of creating a new game.
This means it carries a whole playerbase that's being put on wait until they start saving data again.
Do I want a rushed release? No. But the alpha-beta better begin way before they shut down the servers so we can expect them to start saving data by jan 2013; otherwise FFXIV will lose a lot of the members that supported it after its botched release.
It isn't a matter of "they are making a new game". You can't put a game on hold for 6 months when its already been released. It was their choice to make the game the same, and not a new one.

But it is a new game, and anyone they lose because there is nothing to do for 6 months they will gain back 5 fold when 2.0 launches.
I don't know when they'll resume saving content. I guess it depends on what content we're talking about here.
You could be right.Of course, I think that's a game of chicken that Yoshi P isn't willing to play after all this hard work.

Just as a point to all the people discussing the date of Alpha, the OP wasn't asking about the date of Alpha, she was asking "Will our progress be saved during Alpha/Beta". To which I still think the answer is No, but that's just a guess/opinion (which is the only thing we can give at this point I guess)

Alpha will be running while 1.0 is still going. Once they shut down 1.0, beta will start. I seriously doubt any data from alpha/beta will be carried over. The only things SE allowed to carry over in 1.0 beta was your character name and I think your character creation profile.
In short, nothing you accomplish in alpha or beta will amount to anything.

Alpha begins before 1.0 comes down. They will start saving Data as soon as they let you start using your Character Again. Probably Open Beta.I'm wondering.
Servers save for the last time on nov 1.
Servers go down on nov 11.
Alpha 1 begins. Japanese only.
Alpha 2 begins. Closed doors.
Closed beta begins.
Final version releases.
Lets say each phase lasts 1 month. That's at least 3 months without saving data? Maybe even more?
I really don't want to end up waiting half an year to be able to play the game with what I do amounting to something. :/
