Chocobo Training Impasse

I'm a noob regarding chocobo training. I leveled myself and my chocobo to 100, but spent no effort on his training. Result is, his training level is 10, but I can't get him beyond that. I've tried subjecting him to combat, but no change.

My hypothesis is that his eligibility for higher levels of training achievement (in order to get chocobo eligible to go into a training stables) requires that he engage in combat with adversaries that are level 90 and above until he qualifies for higher training levels.

Does that make sense? Any other advice is most welcome. Thank you in advance.

In order to exceed Rank 10 for your Chocobo, you need to feed them a Thavnairian Onion for Rank 11 unlock, then one for each Rank unlock after each further Rank soft cap until the Rank hard cap of 20 (rank 20 is the current game rank cap for a Chocobo).
So, you will need a total of ten onions.
You get two for "free" during questing:

• Landing a Stable Job
• A Hunter's True Nature

You can use the onions at any time, however doing so will result in no Rank unlock if:

• You do so in a City
• You do so if your Chocobo is not summoned
• You do so while the Chocobo is not currently soft capped in Rank
• IMPORTANT - Do not chain feed 10 onions to the Chocobo, as the first onion will unlock the Rank soft cap, of which then the additional onions will be wasted on as the cap is already unlocked.

You must use the onion either while your Chocobo is stabled in your housing stable (or Free Company / tenant stable) or while you are in the wild outside of a Sanctuary Zone (outside of a city or village).
Correct usage = Level Chocobo to Rank Cap > Use one onion > Level to next Rank Cap > Use one onion > Repeat until Rank 20

Leveling your Chocobo just means while your Chocobo companion is summoned, fighting or healing with you, you are killing monsters that generate EXP, so level appropriate monsters/zones or FATEs that require killing X-number of monsters or monster waves/bosses.
FATEs being generally the fastest method.
Also, due to the EXP buff that Blue Mage job has, you can gain Chocobo EXP a bit faster killing stuff while using the BLU job.
Basically, your Chocobo gains a percentage of the EXP you can get from a monster, so the higher that EXP amount gain is, the higher amount the Chocobo will earn per kill.

Once you use the onion, your Chocobo's current Rank cap will unlock and they can earn additional experience until they reach the next Rank soft cap.
Other than the two you earn through questing, the onions are very difficult to obtain for "free", as they require a time consuming growing/crossbreeding Housing > Garden Plot system in order to get a chance of spawning one (10 day grow/Crossbreed cycle).
However, there are players who do enjoy gardening or use the growing methods so for profit, so there is a steady source market for the onion on the Market Board.
