    Looking to try Hamlet Defense

    Hi Balmung,

I'm looking to try my first Hamlet Defense at some point this week. I tried to get into a group last night and we stood around Ul'dah for two hours to no avail. I currently have a 50 WHM and 50 WVR, but neither are particularly well geared.

If anyone would be interested in trying to put a group together for this and teach a newbie (or if there are other newbies out there that would like to learn) give me a shout below.

(I'm also interested in trying Caravan runs, however I need to finish one more main story quest before I can do Caravans in any nation).

Crafters dont need good gear. You just need to spam standard and run in circles.

Actually if you're spamming standard you need good gear to have a decent success rate. The recipes are hard. Most people instead guarantee most or all of their progress via abilities, rather than rely on their gear. There's the much-desired "4-step" using two 30% progress and two 20% progress abilities, but in practice taking 5 or 6 steps isn't a big problem. You want to try and be consistent though. You definitely don't want to be 30% away from completion and spamming standard, when it suddenly goes unstable, and you're the only one doing Defense Up.

As 50WVR, you'll definitely want to use Grand Design and Culmination + Rapid. For the other 50% your easiest option would be Maker's Muse + Standard. That will put you at 7 steps, but it's a start.

I also have Tricks of Trade from ALC level 30, which gives an additional 20% and could set bold endeavor from LTW 30 which guarentees success for the next action with a rapid. That would be 6 steps, but not quite sure if that'll get it quite to 100%.

A plain success on a rapid is going to be no more than 20% in my experience. It's great when going for HQ with something like Greater Calling (guarantees 48-60% total progress with 0 durability loss and only takes one slot). So that'll be Culmination + Rapid (30-40) + Grand Design (20) + Tricks of the Trade (20) = 70-80% in 4 steps. Bold Endeavor + Rapid won't quite finish it. Getting ARM45 or GSM45 would let you 5-step from that. I think you're going to be sitting at 7-steps without some other killer ability, but that's not a huge problem if you're one of the two DoHs doing Attack Up. Only the Defense Up person really needs to be 4 or 5 step, because if a wave hits while Defense Up is down it takes full-time curing from one WHM to keep the middle Front Line Militia Archer up.

Your whm does not have to geared any more than plain AF and know how to regen, cure, cura, protect and stonskin and mp management, WHM job main focus is keeping NPCs up, NPC's > party members for points...

If your weaver is your only 50 crafting class then you have a little work cut out for you. Get most your crafting classes to 30 for the 3 x 20 Progress ability and get blacksmith to 45 for greater calling and you can 5-6 step crafting no problem, if you want to four step you will need the 30% progress abilities.

My goldsmithing is currently 33, so taking that to 45 probably won't be an issue. But I think I actually want to try running the hamlet before I'll get that, however that would be a good goal for me down the road (sadly my blacksmithing is currently only level 10).

Just wanted to update... Ran my first Halmet last night and it was a great success! I went as a WHM with two other WHM, a PLD, two DoH and two DoL (pretty standard setup). It was my first time as well as one of the other DoL's, but with a little explanation before the fight of where to stand and communication throughout the fight we completed no problem with a score of 55,000. If anyone is interested in doing these in the future, drop a line below and we can try to meet up in game.
