Figures this is the thing that breaks my self-imposed exile...

Honestly, I remember when we learned about Vieran puberty, I was the one who put forward how it's the perfect opportunity for a trans allegory, considering they don't know their own sex until adolescence and already Viera who leave the woods are rebelling against an oppressive sex-segregated culture. Transgender Viera, either medically or magically transitioning (we don't even know how their transition into adulthood works, although there is a real life example in Dominican Republic's "guevedoces", who are children born with female or ambiguous genitalia who grow a penis at age 12), wouldn't be out of place for this setting, and would indeed be very fitting into their tribal story.

We even have a nod to this in one of the short stories where Wuk Lamat remembers her childhood with Erenville and says "You were so pretty, I thought you were a girl!" and he replies "Well, you weren't exactly wrong."
