    Real-Time Character-Swapping

    Proposal for a Real-Time Character-Swapping "Tactical Party" System for Solo and Duty Support Content

    1. Executive Summary
    Final Fantasy XIV has made incredible strides in structural accessibility through the Duty Support and Trust systems, allowing players to experience narrative milestones at their own pace. Concurrently, the upcoming implementation of the Beastmaster limited job in Patch 7.5x proves that the engine can seamlessly handle a single player managing multiple combat entities and executing elemental chains.

    We propose a brand-new, optional gameplay framework: the "Paradigm Tactical" Battle System (PTBS). This system allows a player to register up to four characters from their own service account (or custom-built companion avatars) into a cohesive "Light Party." The player can hot-swap leadership between these four characters in real time during Duty Support content, leveling and gearing each one independently, while maintaining the ability to play any individual character completely solo across Eorzea.

    2. Core Mechanics & Gameplay Loop
    The Tactical Quad: Players can link up to four characters on their account into a tactical strike team. For players without four alternate characters, the feature can utilize custom-geared Grand Company Squadron members or unique customizable avatars.

    Real-Time Shift (The Paradigm Swap): While inside a Duty Support instance, a quick tap of a directional pad or dedicated hotkey smoothly shifts the player's direct control to another party member.

    Example: If the boss targets the player character with a heavy tank buster, the player can instantly swap to their Paladin alt to execute Hallowed Ground, then immediately swap back to their Black Mage alt to continue a complex casting rotation.

    Decentralized Progression: Every piece of dungeon drop loot can be directly assigned to the character who can wear it. Characters earn experience points and gear upgrades relative to the role they played or the composition they belong to, giving immense value to the multi-job and multi-character leveling process.

    Autonomous AI Transfer: When the player is not actively controlling a character, that character instantly reverts to an advanced Duty Support AI routine, executing standard job rotations, dodging mechanics, and fulfilling their assigned role (Tank, Healer, or DPS).

    3. Historical and Technical Feasibility
    Square Enix has a rich, celebrated pedigree of multi-character control systems that have defined the Final Fantasy franchise:

    The Paradigm Shift (FFXIII): Proved the thrill of altering party roles instantly to match shifting boss phases.

    Active Character Switching (FFXV & FFVII Remake/Rebirth): Demonstrated that high-speed, real-time swapping between diverse archetypes keeps combat dynamic, strategic, and highly engaging.

    From a technical standpoint, the foundation for this system already exists within FFXIV:

    Duty Support & Trusts: The underlying AI architecture for handling role-based mechanics and pathfinding is fully mature.

    Beastmaster (Patch 7.5x): The development of Beastmaster shows that the engine can actively track a player alongside multiple companion entities executing independent, reactive skills. Expanding this from beasts to an account's alternate characters is a natural evolutionary step for solo-focused systems.

    Monetization & Account Value: This feature heavily incentivizes players to buy additional character slots or retain multiple characters on a single service account. It also revitalizes the value of casual Alt-character creation.

    A Playground for Mastery: Mastering a single job is rewarding, but mastering the seamless interplay of four distinct jobs under your own real-time command adds a profound level of tactical depth to the game’s standard PvE structure.

    The Ultimate Solo Sanctuary: This satisfies the demographic of players who love the universe and mechanical depth of FFXIV but prefer a completely autonomous, single-player RPG experience when tackling historical or casual content.

    5. Conclusion
    By bridging the gap between MMORPG progression and classic Final Fantasy tactical party control, the Paradigm Tactical Battle System would offer an unprecedented way to experience Eorzea. It respects the player's time, celebrates the legacy of the franchise, and builds logically upon the brilliant work the team has already done with solo-friendly infrastructure and pet-swapping technology.

    Would this system be solely used to level up your other characters? Because it seems like the very thing that the system is used for.

    people have alts, it's just allow you to put them in your duty support. So yes level them.

    Anything that gives the game more solo-functions is a good thing, and it would finally give me an incentive to create and maintain alts.

    Personally, I'm against anything that would incentivize the creation of alts and would much prefer it to remain a "you can make them if you really want to". The game should be, and is, accessible fully on a single character (Savage job dancing notwithstanding but hopefully 8.0 addresses that some).
