The fact that I was told to go there didn't remove any bit of excitement or adventure from the CS though.

Secret quests are pointless when you're playing an MMO in which there's an online community that has access to the whole amount of knowledge the playerbase has about the game. I really don't see the point of having secret stuff that you won't know about unless someone happens to stumble upon it; if the quest is worthwhile, as soon as someone knows about it they're going to tell you whether you want them to or not. If the quest is not worthwhile, then why bother making it secret?
I did, I stumbled on a lot of things in FFXI, I also looked stuff up as well. What makes a quest worthwhile? the reward? Can't you have a random quest that is fun/entertaining with a silly reward?

Problem with your thinking, no game should have secrets. Well, whats the point if you can just look it up? Whats the point if they are silly secrets, like Easter eggs.
