    Mahjong rating

    Hey guys,

So, can anyone please explain to me how the Rating in Doman Mahjong is calculated? Cause the numbers make no sense at all.

I lose points when I win, I win points when I lose, it doesn't seem to be based on the final points at the end of the game (I just finished with 26400 points and lost rating) - please enlighten me. Thank you.

I'm curious to know the answer myself.

While I'm not certain on how to play the game properly, I do know Mahjong because of its nature ends with someone in first, second, third and fourth essentially.

You can technically “win” hands during the match and still lose rating overall if your final placement or score differential wasn’t strong enough.

Everyone starts the game with 25000 points. With a general goal of ending a game exceeding 30000 points.

Since Doman Mahjong is based on the Japanese Riichi Mahjong, and there is a rating system for that game, it could parse out rating in a similar way, where:

1.) Score Difference: Your final points are compared to the starting points (usually 25,000 for 4-player).

2.) Uma (Placement Bonus): A fixed bonus is added based on your finish: +15/+5/-5/-15 for 4-player games.

3.) Rank Points (Platform Specific): An additional bonus or penalty is applied based on your current rank and the game room

    4.) Matchmaking Expectations
Higher-rated players are expected to perform better. Lower-rated players can sometimes gain rating even in 3rd if the room was strong enough.

    So the system is less:

    “Did you finish above 25,000?”

    and more:

“How well did you place relative to both the table and the system’s expectations?”

    That means situations like:

Higher Rank + Weak 2nd Place = Possible Rating Loss
Lower Rank + Respectable 3rd in Strong Lobby = Possible Rating Gain
Barely Positive Score but 3rd Place = Likely Loss
Strong 1st Place = Major Gain

    ---

This could have less to do with you and just because of the overall sparse pool of players that actually engage in Doman Mahjong ranked where you're from.

    Although that being said...

My understanding of it could be completely off base, and I'm free to stand corrected, and you're free to do your own research if this answer is unsatisfactory, but I do believe from preliminary research that would explain the results you've been receiving.

    I hope that helps.

The rating system takes all the fun out of the game.

You can have nothing but almost wins with REALLY good hands and then someone else gets lucky and you lose 30 rating points in one go.
On the other hand, you can win multiple rounds with really good hands (had a full flush today for example) and then only gain 9 or so.

I had almost exclusively good hands today that JUST didn't win (Orphans Rishii for example) or even did win, and still lost over 200 points in a matter of hours - not because I'm playing bad but simply because other people were lucky as hell.

Any rating system should reflect your skill, and this one absolutely doesn't, so what's the point.

Mahjong inherently has a big luck factor that you mitigate with knowledge. Grinding rating is all about pushing the little advantages and being consistent about it, but you can still get massive loss streaks.
