Main & Off Tanks: Name Change

To start off, it’s going to be OK. I doubt the changes are going to be radical enough to completely ruin the fun of tanking.

The main issue in my book is the role names. They definitely need to be changed. At the moment, we have so little information to go off of that I can’t say whether the changes will be good or bad. What I can say is that it does NOT feel great to have the job that made me fall in love with tanking be called an off‑tank. It makes it sound like the lesser of the two.

It would likely have come across better if they had used a naming scheme similar to the one used by the community for healers, shield healers and pure healers.

These are just my thoughts. I could be completely off base here.

It’s a strange choice of wording that I imagine certain people will use as an excuse to have a hissy fit because the WAR provoked after their 5th death in a normal trial. Maybe “counter tank” and “mitigation tank” would’ve gotten the idea across better.

I mean the community notes for healers have the same issue, as a "pure healer" kinda implies being superior, even if we all intuitively know what is being meant by it. Regen vs Barrier healer is better in that regard, tbh.

But I agree, the names are kinda bad. Bastion Tank vs Protector Tank IMO. That's better.

Someone else online thought to rename them to “Defender” and “Protector” instead. I kinda liked it.

Yeah that's a good naming, too! It'd work in combination as well (akin to the healers), Defender Tank vs Protector Tank.

I agree with the name change. Main Tank and Off Tank are terms already taken and adding to confusion. And naming these two categories like this would just offer plenty of opportunities for harassment.
That said, as a person for whom English is the second language, not the first, I have to admit that some suggestions I've been hearing so far seem to have a rather nuanced difference not super apparent for me. For example Defender and Protector sounds pretty much like the same thing to me. Champion could be practically anything battle related.

Of course whatever they name it would be a thing I'd have to adapt to, but if the words are really similar in meaning, it might take a long time for me to learn which is which. ^^;

Personally I like Vanguard and Bastion for the Evolved's version of the Main Tank. No clue for the other one though.

Its the term used in MMOs for the roles, I don't see the problem.

I don't like the naming either kinda makes zero sense esp if PLD could likely function as a OT with how cover is basically on a short cooldown. I kind of think the split is really stupid if they wanna Reward the new tank and PLD by using their mitgation well can't they just also make it so intervention also rewards PLD for timing with extra damage, it makes no sense

Its kinda sad because the whole job fantasy for PLD for me is actually being the "protector tank" this Transends being MT or OT for me but having the most party utility options is a big reason why i like PLD.

The communities term of "Regen" healer feels very off considering how many heal over time skills both scholar and sage has, heck even kardia and fairy healing is a constant HOT effecitvely.
