Your old-school idea is cute!

Going by the UI as shown in the presentation though, my immediate hope is that the background is customisable – either adjustable opacity or some solid background options – because the semi-transparent screen seems overly busy.

I also hope they retain some kind of compact window view – either keep the old interface alongside the new one or design an updated version. Plain is good. Fancy detracts from the functional role of the menu.
