The /tomestone emote implies phones are canon... Is this true?

That assumes too much about what is happening in the /tomestone and /tomescroll emotes.
"You swipe excitedly at your tomestone. Nothing happens."
"You caress your tomestone in search of succor."
Both of these are more or less taking the piss. Poking a little bit pf fun at people who doomscroll, etc.
They are TOMEstones. They aren't phones, they are books.
Emotes are likely not canon unless you really can conjure an unlimited supply of nonperishable and individually proportioned bread, apples, pizza, eggs, and tea.

The /visage emote has you take a selfie with your exotablet, which is probably canon as it's the menu device for cosmic exploration.
But it's not really a phone, and we've had linkpearls forever which do the phone part better than a phone anyway.

Emotes being canon would also imply the existence of Instax within the world of FFXIV, so I guess not?
Bring back 6.0 Dragoon.

Exotablets appear to be canon, and based on what lopporits do with them, they can be used for taking photographs and communication. So...kind of like modern cellphones.
Linkshells are undeniably canon and serve a similar function to phones.
tomestones are allagan data storage devices. but hey, the writers barely care about writing a coherent world anymore so really just say they're w/e you want at this point.
I always theorized Tomestones of Poetics are always relevant because they're the ones full of regular, classical fiction. The Allagan version of Shakespeare to Mary Shelly.
Tomestones are not cellphones but...
Dawntrail spoilers.
Cell phones/ipad/tablet like devices, desktop PCs, Laptops, and Televisions, and roomba-like devices are all present throughout Alexandria and solution 9, both in quests and easily visible in locations throughout the map. Long story short, cell phone-like devices are canon, but were unknown to the source until Dawntrail, and Tomestones certainly aren't cell phones. (They're more like USB sticks or portable hard drives then anything)

I’d say Tomestones are more like Kindles, with one category of stories on them, ie: Poetics.
