I actually noticed this after finishing "Deus ex Machina(limsa lominsa)". I wanted to make a thread about it back then but figured that the lack of interest would make it pointless. But yes, there is a clear difference between the main storyline cutscenes and the GC/Dalamud ones.

I had so many issues with the main storyline cutscenes, that I even began to rant about it to my brother. I didn't mind the first cutscenes and seeing how my character was somewhat weak. Heck, it's the beginning of the game why should I mind. However as the story progressed, I got tired of seeing my character get knocked down/out over and over again.

And my biggest issue with the main storyline cutscenes...My Companion!

This was the issue that I ranted the most about. It annoyed me each and every time that she was doing all the talking and my character just looking left...right...left....right...between the people that were being interacted with. I remember the ifrit cutscene still clearly because of that. My companion doing all the talking while my character just stands there going all "......." and looking all o_o

Then came "Deus ex Machina" and I finally truely felt that my character shined how he was supposed to be. No more running away, no more getting knocked out. Instead he beat the living crap out of that machine while everyone was running away. I was a happy man lol.

So, I just got back after month ago, started up GC storyline from the beginning and just finished. Is it just me or is it dramatically different from the main story line and just about every storyline back in XI?

I remember Yoshi-P saying recently that they still have the same main writer from XI through XIV but that now he's working with her closely to develop the story.

It feels like now, the storyline under Yoshi-P's direction puts a lot more emphasis on the player being more critically important as the main character. Where else before in XI and XIV's main quest line the emphasis was always on the npc's. While the player was just some random person in the background who happened to get stuck at the wrong place at the wrong time and talked into doing all the dirty work/fighting so the NPC's can go enjoy the cut scene's spot light for the bulk of the time.

I thought before that style of being some nobody couldn't be helped being an MMO and our characters are silent. But the GC storyline turned that around extremely well. Through out it's story I felt unique and important. And the ending made me feel like I was some great hero. That the day couldn't be saved without me and that spot light shined like a thousand suns straight down on me the whole time.

Despite completing most of XI's story lines, XIV's GC quest felt like the first time in a FF MMO I was a real main character/hero of the story like Cloud in VII or Squall in VIII. That finale in "To kill a raven" was especially rewarding.

So I wanted to ask people here who finished it as well if they got the same feeling? If they noticed the same differences between Yoshi-P's style vs Tanaka's? I remember hearing on the boards that Yoshi-P was a big fan of Skyrim and the GC quests do feel much more similar to that then anything I've ever experienced in XI or XIV's main quests. Specifically referring to how the story lines pay more attention on the player vs the npc's.
Well, people sure love to have their egos stroked. Personally, it gets old and annoying how the NPC's in the quests pat you on the back for every minor deed in the story. "Oh my, you killed that marmot!? You're the hero Eorzea's been waiting for, marry me!"

Meanwhile, you know they say the same thing to every other adventurer. The novelty kind of wears off after the billionth time.

It's good they actually made the quests more interactive though, so you're not playing parley to defeat a tribe of beastmen or some crap.

I had the exact same problem. It really bothered me too how our companion seemed to be the main character. I understand it's impossible to give a captivating monologue with a mute hero but the old story line style seemed to go out of it's way to ignore players as much as possible, as if to say "We can't think of anything to do with you, so we'll just shove yah over to the side and wait patiently till we can sic a monster on you."

So glad Yoshi-P got rid of that.
