Its the same for any MMO, for example if you don't have enough spirit in WoW as a healer people won't want you, same if you are a Mage with low Spellpower.

Part of me agrees with you but then if others have put in the time and effort to get the best gear and you want to play with them you should probably do the same.

It's not just FF11 and WoW that these people exsist any MMO is the same and I doubt FF14 will be any different in a few years when end game content is more common.

The OP says he would rather substitue his points to make up holes in his stats where his gear is lacking, but this is no different, because you will still look gimp when comapred so someone with the best gear and best stat allocation.
