I played DAoC for 6+ year and damage meters weren't needed because PvE encounters did not required that. There was no enrage timer for most of NMs, no DPS race. It was more like toss as many people (or Animist Mushroom) as you can on NMs in order to defeat them.
On PvP, damage were stable and easily calculable, damage formula were super easy for mages, applying resistance as well. You would just see "You deal 450 (-150) damage".
Casting speed cap were easy to reach... I was reaching it even while not having any points put in DEX at character creation. It's just a complete different game anyway, on RvR, you don't care about your pure DPS, it's all about assist and strategy (using skills at the right time). Positioning as a team as well.
When you had a Mana Enchanter debuffing heat and a Light Mentalist nuking right after, most of targets would die in 3 hits, the hell I need a parser for that...
Join a LS that don't care then. That's how MMO works. Hardcore raiding guilds will always try and min/max everything. Just find a raiding environment that suit you.
Damage meters are useful on encounters with DPS checks.
