Apparently mobile gaming is quite big in Japan, I remember in the mid 2000s there was a mobile only FF, Before Crisis: FFVII. It was released on one or two mobile phones that met the hardware requirements, and unfortunately never left Japan.

In the West, smartphone gaming and tablet gaming have a near non-existent hardcore gamer player base. It is considered casual gaming, and is rife with cartoonish styled indie games and basic mechanics used to pass the time when waiting say at a bus stop.

Trying to move several hundred thousand hardcore gamers that play on console and PC to a mobile style or format would end poorly, and risk really cheapening the game. I remember how that P2W Diablo immortals went. I'm not a PC gamer nor a hardcore MMO player with their finger on the pulse of MMO gaming, and even I heard the echos of that disaster. Mobile gaming is also known to use FOMO as a means to keep players active.

On the other hand - if they continued focusing on the hardcore gaming format, and also made a portable version which was 1:1 (aside perhaps from visuals, that would depend on hardware) this probably would do very well, OSRS android works fine. I think the mobile version they have now isn't a 1:1 portable experience but something a bit different from what I've heard, and being different could take away attention and resources.
