How do I know if something is sold?

If you mean something you used your retainer to place on auction, then if you are in game and on your home server, you get a chat message and on-screen text, that your "whatever" sold for ###gil in the "wherever" city market board, the instant is sold.
If you are not online or are off your home server, you do not get a notice.
When you check summon your retainer, and they had sold something while you were away or didn't see the message, you will get an extra chat message to the effect that you made gil.
If you do not get a chat message because you were offline/off server and do not get a extra you made gil message when you summon the retainer, then nothing got sold.

To add to Kirika's post you can see the sales history of a retainer with item, sell price, and date when you access them at the retainer bell. On the market board there is also a sales history button that shows all recent sales when you search for an item. You can use this to see if an item that matches the price you set has sold.
