Final Fantasy bards have always been support, to the point that the Spooniest of Bards barely did anything except run away and heal.
It was definitely a weird decision.Bards being archers as well in FFXIV is perhaps one of the worst job designs and aesthetics to ever exist in MMOs.
The potential of two full-fledged popular jobs has been reduced to nothing but an ugly hybrid and abomination that neither fully satisfies either. It's both laziness and lack of creativity.

I look just like the roes next door... if you happen to live next door to an amusement park.

Hunters in World of Warcraft are a damage-dealing class known for their ability to engage in both ranged and melee combat, utilizing a variety of weapons and their loyal animal companions. They can specialize in Beast Mastery, Marksmanship, or Survival, each offering unique playstyles and abilities this is what a bards supose to be hell look at ronda rea= best marked hunter in game i rest my case its no def player and stop stealing bard good skills for bloody def 1

job doesn't follow my highly specific stereotype of the class other games imprinted in me this is unacceptable

It doesn't seem like anything productive will come of this thread. I will leave one comment, but if my suspicions are correct, it will do no good.
Renda-Rae is a "hunter", but that is not her class. She is an Archer, just as the player can be. Hunting is just what her profession was. Archers as a class are deployed in military units, and Bards are also used for their benefits in groups.
There is no reason to assume "Hunter" in every game has to mean the exact same thing as other games. It doesn't matter if you played WoW, it is not the same.
The lore reason for why Bards exist as combatants is because they motivate their allies through song. It would make no sense if they did not. There is also no inherent reason for them to have an animal companion.

I like the idea of archers that are versed into singing and all the bard arts. It feels unique and flavorful to me.Bards being archers as well in FFXIV is perhaps one of the worst job designs and aesthetics to ever exist in MMOs.

I would be cool if Archer split (kinda like Arcanist) to give us a Bard and Ranger path. While we're at it, I'd also like Rogue to split to give a path to Thief (even tho Yoshi P hates Thief)
Yeah well tough luck buddy. Bard's always been a support oriented job.

Dawntrail is what I imagine the entire MSQ as a healer-main.

Not to side track this thread, but every time Theif gets brought up, I ask what it would do that isn't already covered by Rogue. Like...what would its job identity be within the combat system of XIV? No one seems to ever be able to give a legitimate answer. People seem to just want something called Theif but then can't define it.
