AF gear and the new glamour system

I'd like to start off on that I actually support unlocking AF gear. Personally, I think it would be silly to have just one thing restricted and everything else free to use. Plus it makes for fun lore outfits. Why wouldn't a WOL who uses multiple jobs mix and match their clothing styles on an occasion? However, I do agree with the sentiment that AF gear should still have some feeling of 'earning it.'

Currently, you can claim any piece of gear you want from NPCS, though I know this is not the case for quest-locked AF gear Pre-SHB. With the current system there's not really a point in claiming a piece to which you don't have the class at level for, unless you are planning to level it, because there isn't a way to wear it because of class and level restrictions.

So my thought is: Are they going to just let everyone use newer AF gear without even touching the class? Personally I would hope, and think what they should do, is still restrict the claiming of it. Perhaps make it so you have to be currently on that class and at the level to grab it from the NPC, or some other check. Especially since earlier AF gear already has this kind of restriction by virtue of it generally being quest locked. (IIRC, only STB is the exception pre-SHB, and that requires seals?)

Of course it's not the end of the world if everyone can use it. I won't personally throw a fit over it, I just think it would be nice to still have it feel special and earned in a way. I enjoy getting to run over to the NPCs to claim a new piece of gear. And honestly I think still restricting the claiming but giving you free reign to glam it might actually introduce some people to classes they don't necessarily play because of how valued glam is by a lot of people. Which I view as a net positive.

Either way, hope everyone is enjoying the glam grind I've already found myself doing content I thought I would never do (Like Bozja + Eureka) so I am excited to see what this update has in store for content in general.

In terms of obtaining or wearing the gear, everything is going to be the same. It's the glamour that will be different. So like the glamour prism doesn't care what the jobs or level of the glamour is, it's just glamour.

But as gear, it will be the same as before. Hope that clears it up.

Oh, yeah I know it's just about the glamouring specifically! That's what I'm saying, that I do wish there was a change in the AF gear system then. Because you don't even have to unlock a job to claim it from vendors nor do you have to have it unlocked to put in your glamour dresser. I'm leveling MCH, for example, so I grabbed some of the gear early and put it in my dresser already. That's when I stopped and thought about that fact that I didn't technically have to level MCH if I just wanted the AF gear, and that just felt a bit saddening to me personally because I feel like the achievement of finally being able to use it for glamour feels nice. Unless there's another restriction I'm not aware of and it will still be only glamour-able in general if the class has gotten to that point?

Can you even claim a piece for a job you don't have leveled? I was p sure you need the job at appropriate level to actually claim it to begin with. Or was that changed?

Yes you can claim it from the AF gear npcs even if you don't have it unlocked, much less leveled. Which makes sense under the current system. Why bother restrict the claiming when the gear itself is restricted by level and job?

AF is so sad in 14. You should get it when you open the job at 30 and it should be the gear you want to wear when levelling through the expansion. With an upgrade dropping just before the new expansion. The game has the technical ability to let gear scale with your level. And doesn't threaten the endgame treadmill of boringness.


Instead AF is relegated to glamour discussions. Thats how you build job identity.

Fully agree, you shouldn't be able to wear a job's gear unless you at least have that job levelled. I hope they change the vendors to reflect this.

I'm very surprised (though I'm absolutely not complaining) that they actually didn't restrict AF gear! Even moreso by the fact that there aren't any level restrictions either. I've gotten so used to there being some kind of caveat to these kinds of things.
But yeah I do think it's a little weird that people will just be able to pick up AF gear on jobs they don't have leveled yet. However, I know with at least ShB onward, you need to at least have the job role quest completed to unlock the corresponding gear. Granted you only need to do it once per role.

I don't expect them to change this, tbh. But who knows? Maybe it will inadvertently encourage people to try out those jobs anyway.

It would be a bit odd if someone could get the AF gear for adventuring without even having the class unlocked but would still need to level DoH and DoL for that gear since you buy it with scrips. It makes sense to limit it only to someone who got the class to the level where it could be used as normal gear.

You do still need the class leveled in Shadowbringers. I have an alt that just finished and I did all the role quests but can only access the gear for the classes I have leveled on her.

You don't need it to unlock the gear, actually! I haven't done a majority of the EW role quests, for example, but I can still get the gear. It's the dye channels not the gear that are locked behind the role quests in DT and EW but-

I double checked and you are right, I didn't notice that. So it is only the EW and DT vendors that are like then, strange. I guess that means they could easily do for the new ones, since it seems they have the code or whatever for it already?
