You do yourself a disservice by opting to skip a story over hyperbolic bandwagon hate. DT is hardly "universally panned for horrid writing", there are plenty of people that enjoyed it. I personally thought the writing wasn't any worse than that of SB, ShB and EW, it wasn't spectacular or even all that great but it was serviceable and I overall enjoyed the ride. You won't know either way unless you experience it for yourself.

It gets a lot better about halfway through. You can skip most of the trial stuff, though. It really doesn't come up later anymore and is just fluff to endear the new character to the player. Look forward to about... what was it, level 96-ish? I think you'll notice the tonal shift. Without spoiling anything there will actually be stakes involved again to some degree and there will be a semblance of relation to the previous expansion's plot.
Warning - there is a decently important cutscene when you return from the desert to the capital from the train station. It's one of those voiced ones. I actually accidentally skipped it and had to go look it up because I was thrown for a loop, lol. Try getting into the story from there. The two plot lines are really not connected at all.
The beginning just... it drags, but coming from a certified DT loather, there is some good in it too if you can give it a chance.

That aside, hope things stay good for OP. Enjoy the time off and maybe we'll see ya in a few years again.

Alexandria really isn’t better, if nothing dumping trial for Alexandria while still not actually fixing anything is a Big part of why DT is so bad

This is kind of a wild thing to say. High end content is at the highest point its ever been at. You also seemingly haven't really done any high end content for like 2-3 years. You've missed out on quite a lot.

I don't wanna be mean OP, but most people either don't care about these posts or deride them. You're not going to convince anyone happy with the game to hate it, and for the other side of the table you're just preaching to the choir. And as we've seen on the forums, SE really couldn't care less about opinions/feedback on here even though in media tours / PR / etc they claim that they do. Their actions speak a lot louder than their words.

Your best bet in this scenario is to actually cut off your sub and make it stick, and not be one of the folks that claims "I'm really gonna do it!" and still sneak around trying out patches and playing and stuff. If you're actually quitting? Awesome. Do it, and do it immediately, so they're cut off from your cash ASAP.

The only thing SE actually reacts to is when they lose money. It's the thing that forced their hand in the creation of 2.0, after all.
