Glamor and stuff is a great addition, but the genre survived and thrived long before WoW ever started the trend with transmogs, and having a whopping one entire set locked out to you from a time when you refused to play the game for whatever reason will not hurt you. Afterall, as people like you love to claim, "They're just pixels."
The thing you're missing here is that glamour IS considered one of the ways you can focus on playing the game. It wasn't always this way, but now it very much is. Your adventurer plate can list glamour as one of your interests, the cash shop is filled TO THE BRIM with outfits, and every patch releases new level 1 items which have no meaningful stats and exist for the sole purpose of glam. Regardless of what this genre used to be, the fact remains that for some people? Glamour is why they play the game and SE doesn't only enable this mindset, they encourage it. Those players not having access to something they want for glamour upsets them, and when the majority complains SE tends to listen, which is why those rewards will be distributed again. I recommend you take a step back and reassess what MMOs are these days, because they are not what you and I played over a decade ago. The genre has changed my man and some people just like to play dress up, which the devs are more than happy to cater to.
