    Suggestion: Dye Storage

I want to suggest a storage system for color dyes in a similar fashion as Societal Currency. See screenshots below as a quick visual created in Photoshop demonstrating how I image this would work.

When a dye is converted to Storage it saves the dye as a set and not the individual color. So for example "Sky Blue Dye" and "Storm Blue Dye" will both increase the same number under the category "Blue Dyes". Then when you need to use it it would work like normal but you could just dye whatever you need any shade of blue and it would decrease the number total from the "Blue Dyes" category. This would decrease the need of having tons of different dyes to just sets categorized by color (red, orange, yellow, etc.) and by type (pastel, neon, metallic, etc.) -Edited 10/20/25

This method might also see us getting more "types" of colors in the future such as "velvet red" or "leather red" etc. -Edited 10/20/25

(I understand that some colors have more value such as "Pure White" and "Jet Black" and would be end up having the same value as all shades of White & Black dyes in my example. This would still be the best way to organize them in my opinion. Or we can either split them off into their own "Rare" type, or fit them into "Neon" type dyes.) -Edited 10/20/25

Love it, would like to have it, would be very nice.

But also will have to be real about it, this is unlikely to happen for the same reason raid tokens wont get currency tabbed, which is some inventory infrastructure nightmare of a system this game likely still is dealing with.

Basic rundown - with your inventory, saddlebag and retainer slots you have what is "variable character information" - dedicated space every character has that modifies whenever you gain, use or move items.

Currencies are also dedicated character data, tomestones, gil, etc. But every single tracks something different. This is fixed character info that every character loads with, regardless if its a Lv1 Gladiator starting out, Omni Lv100 Hexa Legend gigachad or the RMT bot army.

All of this is, albeit small, data on a storage drive somewhere.

If you made dyes into essentially "currency", every single character ever made will need to have their character info table expanded for virtually every dye we have (regardless if you have 0 any dye) and will expand everytime a new dye is added. This doesn't sound like a lot, but it scales up really fast.

The other problem is also the jank of the game that is "loading character data". More fixed things to track = more character data to load and depending on "how" it is implemented, it is either no problem at all up to just pain. I have little faith in this being done well without xyz reason why you cant access something in a duty, a different world server or datacenter.

And before anyone says it - yes, modern games dont have this issue and it actually shouldnt be an issue. FFXIV is an old game of which we have limited transparency on how much tech debt we still are dealing with.

Not protecting them, just openly criticizing and being realistic.

That UI you made looks super clean, I love it! If anything, I'd do it so hovering over each color tells you how many of it you have, and if you don't have any it shows up as an empty circle to prevent confusion.

Apologies, I can see now how my post was confusing. I edited the original to be more clear on my intent. Copy below.

Now that I think on it, Shistar's idea of hovering over each color and having individual numbers of each dye might be a easier way to implement the dye storage solution with the current way dyes are being used.

However, I still stand by my initial idea of having all colors of the same type increase the overall number for that color's storage category. I am realizing now that there might be further unintended consequences to this. Although not bad, they will probably take a lot of work to adjust. For example all same type colors going into the same type pool will inevitably make all these dye color items obsolete. This might however, open up an opportunity to add more colors in the future. This could be countered by implementing the dye conversion option first. Waiting a while for players to adjust to this system. Then in subsequent patches removing all dye items altogether and replacing them with pigment items of each color/type such as used in crafting dyes. Then replacing dye items with pigments items from the Market Board, quests, missions, and the Mog Station. The end goal being that this will allow players to convert pigments into "currency" in their menus in a similar fashion as Societal Currency.

Although both ways can work, it really depends on how much work they are willing to put into this effort.
