While double EXP weekends may be somewhat overkill, I do like the idea of "mini-events". It's something to keep players coming back, and keeps things fresh. Though, I think if you're going to do something like this, it would be better to draw on what, as I see it, was an improvement on the system; namely ME3's multiplayer. ME3 does week long quests (simple things, like "as a community, kill 3,000,000 banshees") and the following weekend, you get some sort of reward, like better equipment you can purchase.
I'm not saying to copy ME3 note for note, but that sort of style of event could really add some interesting life to the game, while not taking much in the way of implementation time. Not to mention, given that this is an MMO, the variety of rewards you could give is quite large.
I am casual and I maxed all battle classes and gather classes + 1 craft in year of my gameplay, that is enough. Dont understand why some need it to be "hyper" fast. That would ruin all the fun with friends along. I think Exp + chein exp is really fast now and dont need to be doubled. lol
+ there are exp scrolls and some exp food, and rested bonus. That goes for your double exp.
Or casuals will feel like they missed something important if they couldn't play that week-end.
Double-edged sword.
Personally, I'm all for special events, but they should not involve xp or gil.
The first MMO I played with double exp weekends was Aion..... I hate Aion.
I vote yes on double EXP weekends tho.
This is not a free to play game and this game does not need such random incentives to play.
Wow >.> I mean, it's already disturbingly easy to progress as far as I'm concerned.
Bizarre as some of you lot may think my saying it, a double experience event would probably drive me off let I spoil getting to enjoy the journey to 50 even further.
Besides, that's anything but creative. As the Lalafell said above, special and mini-events are great.. if they're not just someone lazily flipping the rate controls and spoiling the journey all the more.

Unless your game is underpopulated, it's not healthy to create a system that makes people want to do the same thing at the exact same time.

Go play a game like MapleStory during a double EXP period. Watch how horribly laggy the server gets and how it's impossible to find a place to grind. That will cure you of ever wanting double EXP events in games.
Wait for the Grand Company anniversary day.
I think september or october was it
