Cannot figure out how to progress.

This will probably seem stupid to many but I can't seem to find anyone else having this specific problem. I started playing a few months back and have been slowly progressing through ARR. I defeated Ultima Weapon and have progressed a little past that. My current Main Scenario Quest is titled "You have selected regicide". It says that my average item level needs to be level 54. My problem is that I can't seem to figure out how to get better equipment at this point. My character is level 54 at least but my item level is 49. Can someone explain it to me? The game is just so large, my brain can't grasp everything all at once. I'm missing something.

The quest "you have selected regicide" is a level 50 quest (you can check on wiki for example). However, the level 50 is more a recommendation. You can do it with lower level. For information, it's not really a quest, it's a trial. You can go for it via the Duty Finder so it's easier.

Now regarding your question, I'm surprised because I can't recall that this quest was requesting anything related to gear, even more one of a level higher than that of the quest itself. Therefore, sorry for my question, but are you sure that it's your active quest? The different duty logs can be very confusing at times. Maybe the text you see is from another quest?

Otherwise, related to your gear, there are many different ways to obtain it: market board, dugeons & other duties, quests, tomestones, scrips exchange, Grand Company (currency seals), NPC vendors, and so on...

Generally, this game is very overwhelming at start, due to the enormous volume of information to swallow. I was myself not long ago new to it. I consumed lot of times just reading stuff to understand. Take it easy. Good luck.

    Firstly, welcome to Eorzea!

Okay having a look at your Lodestone profile I can see immediately what your problems are. For a start, you have not yet upgraded your class (Marauder) to it's Job (Warrior). At level 30 the starting classes get 'Job' upgrades that increase their power and unlock new abilities that you cannot get otherwise. This is made worse by the fact that your class no longer gains new abilities by default after level 50, from then it's only Job abilities you get. So gaining your class's Job is pretty much vital and mandatory. But it's okay, you're still new so it's all a learning experience for you! (it doesn't help the game does not do a very good job telling you these things). And you did the right thing asking for help here!

Again looking at your character screen it says you do have WAR unlocked, but you just don't have it equipped, thus that means you've done at least the Job quest for WAR and all your class quests, so that's good. When you did the Job quest you would have gained a 'Soul Crystal' item, this is a special piece of equipment that you equip into the bottom right slot of your Character screen, and this will then automatically change your class to WAR. It's not permenant though, as it's dependent on having the crystal equipped. So open the Character screen in the main menu and click on the empty gear slot at the bottom right of the screen which says 'Soul Crystal'. You should have severeal there based on your Lodestone profile, but the one important for you is the 'Soul of the Warrior'. Click on it and drag it across to the slot, and you'll immediately change to WAR, which should raise your HP and stats as well as change your class's logo and name, but the level will be still the same (the Job piggybacks on the class so you're not specifically a Warrior, but a Marauder/Warrior).

Now that you have your Job upgrade, keep doing the quests the roegadyn WAR gives you, as these will give you some unique abilities you cannot get otherwise. Additionally, some of the later quests will also reward you with your Job's 'Artifact Armour' (or 'AF') - this is specific for that Job and is more powerful than the normal gear you can buy from a shop. I'm not certain but AF should have been enough to meet the item level requirement for the Thornmarch battle which you are now up to in the main storyline, failing that there should be level 54 gear available for sale on the Market Board that would even be better. This should be more than enough to at least meet the requirements to face down Good King Moggle Mog.

If you need any further help, please ask as this is what this section is for!

Enkidoh explained it, but by that quest, you should at minimum have equipped your Item Level 90 Warrior job gear.

While it's important to do the MSQ (fireball icon quest), you also need to do class/job quests, which the game reminds you of every 5 levels in the chatbox.

Warrior quests (which Marauder upgrades to) take place just north of Costa Del Sol in Eastern La Noscea. It's a blue quest.

Upon completing the level 50 Warrior quest, you should have a coffer in your inventory. If you select Use on it to redeem it, you should have some Item Level 90 gear, which you can equip to resolve the issue.

To equip it quickly, you can open the character window and click the Recommended Gear button:

Now, you can actually get better gear by clicking the blue bag NPC at Gridania, in exchange for Allagan Tomestones of Poetics (you get these from level 50 dungeons). I recommended starting with accessories (ring, bracelet, necklace, earrings) because these will need upgrading the most:

Thank you to everyone who replied. This should definitely help me continue the game. I'm not used to MMOs so most games I play, I can skip tutorials and still be able to figure it out. I guess I skipped the wrong ones this time. Lol

If we're being real, sometimes the tutorials arent written clearly enough anyway. So reading doesnt always help. But if you do come across anything you need help with then this is usually a good spot to ask for help.
